Curtain brackets - drill bits and rawlplugs
I am putting curtain brackets into a wooden beam that is 19mm thick and runs horizontally above my front room window - there is plasterboard behind this. I have been told that I can get away with using wood screws without rawl plugs, but I am not sure if this is the best way given that the screws I have are about 35mm…

Bad lock or Bad DIY?
Hi, I just bought a Brenton Bolt lock from B&Q to try and add a little bit of security to the bunker that I'm storing my bike in (it's not expensive enough for anything better!). The bunker has two doors and after fitting the lock I've found that when you pull both doors at the same time, the bolt just slides out, even…

mounting a IKEA besta cabinet on the plaster board
Hi, I live in a new built house (6 years old) and everything is made of plasterboard here. I want to mount a ikea besta unit on one of the main wall (the one shared with my neighbour). Plug socket 8ft in the air?
Hello everyone, I have a rather random but niggling question and wondered if anyone had something similar in their home, and could tell me how they've made best use of it :) I have a single plug socket just underneath the coving of my bedroom ceiling and can not ascertain why or how anyone would be able to use it, or even…

Garden furniture - best quality?
We need to replace our current garden furniture (Allibert table, 6 chairs and a parasol). This set was bought in 1986 and has been superb quality and comfort. It was very expensive at the time, and considered 'top of the range' but has been real value-for-money. We've been looking at rattan and wondered if anyone here has…

Smelly drains!!
I've noticed that whenever we've had heavy'ish rain and then flush the toilet a very sulphurous smell emanates from the drains outside the kitchen. There's no apparent blockage as the water etc runs free when the manhole is lifted. I can't work out why or where this pong is coming from.

High Gloss Dining Table
Hi, I'm considering purchasing a high gloss dining table which looks rather lovely, but i'm concerning about the ease of scratches. Has anyone had any experience of this? Would you recommend staying clear from such dining tables, or can you take protective measures to minimise the risk. The table is as follows:

Shower tray on solid floor
I'm thinking of putting a shower in. The floor is solid concrete and so the waste pipe will have to run above the floor. There are some shower trays where you have to buy additional leg and side panel kits, are these ok, or are the higher shower trays a better option?

Telescopic roller blinds! Where can I find them?
I've spent hours searching but I cannot find these anywhere. I need a blackout roller blind that fits inside the frame of the window but that doesn't need screws for fitting, a bit like the telescopic shower rails you can get. Any idea where I can get one of those? Thanks in advance for the help!

PartyWall Surveyor problem
Hi I've had building work done and I've been through the PartyWall Agreement process with a surveyor I appointed. Someway through I was issued additional unagreed charges from my surveyor whom I now do not trust. Now that the work has been completed I have been told he needs to come back and 'sign off' the work and this…

shellac?
Does anyone know if you can buy shellac for furniture/wood in the UK or of a good alternative to seal wood? I'm in the process of refurbishing an old piece of furniture - it's a 1930s oak dresser that has that common dark brown stain on it. I'm painting it with Annie Sloan chalk paints and the dark stain bleeds through the…

Packing the gland nut on a lockshield valve
I'm finding conflicting views online on whether I can easily undo the gland nut and pack it on a lockshield valve. Some folk say you'll be flooded, others say, as long as you've closed the valve, you'll have no problem. It's an old, pretty standard looking valve dating from 30 years ago, if that helps. It has a very slight…

Musty smell and damaged carpet
I have an old house and on investigating a musty smell I noticed a small patch of carpet (about 3 inches square) seemed damp and when I touched it the tuft broke away. There are no footings in the oldest part of the house (it's about 200 yrs old) and this is where the problem was found. Question: Is this a sign of mould…
