Does anyone know if you can buy shellac for furniture/wood in the UK or of a good alternative to seal wood?
I'm in the process of refurbishing an old piece of furniture - it's a 1930s oak dresser that has that common dark brown stain on it. I'm painting it with Annie Sloan chalk paints and the dark stain bleeds through the paint. Annie Sloan recommends sealing the piece with shellac if this happens. Shellac is a fairly common (and cheap!) product in north America but I can't find it here. Is it called something different here? Or is there an alternative product that will do the same job?
I bought a pot of Rustoleum clear sealer and tried that but it doesn't seem to have worked

Have you tried Zinsser BIN? Thats shellac based and a good stain block.A chap I know buys up dressers and tables from auctions and paints them with a finish and swears by BIN.

That is the right stuff - used it loads of times on wall/plaster and on wood.0

I use Barrentine Shellac Sanding Sealer. Easy to apply and quick drying. £3.49 for 250ml from local store.0

Thank you for the recommendations - I saw the Zinsser product when I was googling but wasn't sure if it was the right thing and it's kind of pricey so I didn't want to risk it (the rustoleum one was only £4 so worth a punt!). I think a trip to b&q is on the cards for me...there are some cheaper options to buy online but I have no patience today!Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0
