Packing the gland nut on a lockshield valve

I'm finding conflicting views online on whether I can easily undo the gland nut and pack it on a lockshield valve. Some folk say you'll be flooded, others say, as long as you've closed the valve, you'll have no problem.

It's an old, pretty standard looking valve dating from 30 years ago, if that helps. It has a very slight leak from around the spindle.

Do any of our resident plumbing/heating guys have a view?

No problem , when you unscrew the nut you might get a small dribble , no more.; that is providing you just put some more packing on top of the existing. If you try and dig the old stuffing out you could be in trouble. Use a few strands of plumbers hemp

Yes, it's tight as I can get it.

It's no issue, given you have some level of plumbing knowhow you probably have a roll of ptfe tape kicking about. Undo the gland, wrap with tape, tighten down undo and repeat etc until you have some compression but still have a gap to tighten down further later
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Cheers, chaps. Went like a charm. Well, apart from thinking it wasn't working but found it needed even more PTFE tape.....
