External brick repair
Morning All, I moved into my house 8 months ago and have noticed that around the front bay window the filler/cement/mortar used to fill in the brickwork that was removed when the window was installed has started to come loose. I want to remove this - as it looks like a bodge-job - and re-fill it properly. What should I…

Replace a UPVC Door lock mechanism, what to get?
My heavy front door has not locked for a long time, the handle will not move upwards allowing it to lock. Recently I decided to have a tinker with it rather than spend like £200 getting someone out to fix it. I've fixed the hinge so it's more level and closes flush instead of slightly catching the frame, and I've fully…

So the family home was purchased 20 odd years ago, its a bungalow, with a dodgy extension, which now hasn't been used for about 5 years. Removing paint from stone patio?
Our useless painters washed their buckets etc at the tap outside my kitchen. There is a drain outlet just on the other side of the door. They still emptied the buckets on the stone patio and let all the nasty paint stuff wash into my lawn! Lawn is ok, but there is a white patch all along the path of the water. Right in the…

Others putting rubbish in our skip!
Hi there - we're having building work done, as are the neighbours across the road. Yesterday neighbours were complaining that their skip had been filled with someone else's rubbish (no-one saw who dumped it). Their skip was removed this morning (as it was full of someone else's rubbish and so was no use to them). Today…

Appliance recommendations Bosch/Neff/Siemens
I need to buy an induction hob, built in double oven and island extractor fan. In an ideal world I would buy Miele, but I don't think the budget can stretch to it! I would still like to stick with German makes though. I'm a bit overwhelmed by the choice and wonder if there is much difference between the different options?…

Broken window catch
We think the catch has snapped inside the mechanism - we can't open the window at all, but can hear a rattling sound when attempting to. Its double glazing - is it fixable or do we need to get a double glazing person in to take the whole thing out to fix a broken catch? Cheers.

are open plan kitchen/diner/living room more economical for heating?
Is there any rule of thumb for whether it costs more to heat a house with an open plan layout downstairs or whether its energy efficient to open up the walls as much as possible so you don't have a separate hallway, kitchen, dining room and living room? Its a 1970s, concrete floored, flatroofed terrace - so the ceilings…

are sensor taps in a bathroom/wc a good idea?
I'm starting to plan a new bathroom and a new downstairs loo for me, toddler and baby. I saw you can now get those sensor taps that work with infrared for £45-100 on ebay. I was thinking that in the bathroom and downstairs wc they might be easier for my kiddies to operate and less likely to result in wasted water than…

How do you cut safety glass?
Mornin 'all, I have bought some coloured 140 high splashback/upstands in 1m lengths. Is there a trick to cutting them to size? All I'm thinking at the moment in a small grinder but being on clear view it needs to be a nice clean cut.

Cost of replacing a roof tile
This morning a tile fell off my roof, just wondered how much it costs to get someone to come out and replace it? and will this be easy as it is such a small job. I had the roof checked 2 years ago and all it needed was a minor repair. The house was built in the 1930s and has the original roof.

Wiring a ceiling fan
Following the hot weather, the only fan I could get my hands on is a ceiling fan. So I've found out how to re-wire the ceiling rose (here), and the instructions for the fan say the fan can be configured in three modes: 1) Fan and light controlled by independent pull switches 2) Fan controlled by pull switch, light…
