Island Extractor Fan Installation
Hi all, long time since I've been on here but we are having some building work done at home including a new kitchen and it has thrown up a possible issue. According to the current design the hob is going to be installed directly underneath an RSJ. I'm wondering if this is going to limit us to a recirculation extractor or…

Hi All, This may sound like a really thick question but what is the best way to run the heating and hot water. Also, I have the heating on all the time and just turn it up and…

Water only hot when heating is on
Hi Everyone. Hoping for some advice on what might have caused this. Combi boiler has seemed fine (make is Ideal); heating the water and the central heating with no problems, nice and hot. Now we seem to be struggling to get hot water unless the central heating is turned on. Any suggestions, please? Tim

should I switch off water?
We are going away in 3 days, for 2 weeks. We have had a couple of leaks within the last 6months on our mains water pipe (lead) outside the property, but past the stopcock, so our responsibility, so they have been repaired. I was wondering if I should switch the water off at the stopcock when we go away-in case the pipe…

Rentokil Entotherm pest control
Hi there, I am about to move into a new flat, and have been told there is a moth infestation in the carpets. As I have a child, I do not want to go down the fumigation route, and rentokil seem to have this treatment whereby only heat is used. Has anyone used this method, and how much did you pay? This is a 2 bed Flat.…

Options for large asbestos cement structure
Hi all, I will be buying a property that has a large workshop/shed constructued almost entirely out of asbestos cement board. The recommendation for asbestos cement is essentially 'leave it alone'. But given it's in the garden and pretty hard to avoid (especially with young children around) I'm looking it at getting it…

Hello, Just wondering if anyone knows how I can fix my office chair? One of the screws on the side of the chair has snapped off and half of it is stuck inside of the chair unable to be loosed. Baumatic gas oven cuts out intermittently...
...my baumatic gas oven occaisionally cuts out for no apparent reason. I thought it might be the thermocouple, so I got it replaced (although I thought that a thermocouple failure would cause more than intermittent problems?) but it still happens every now and then. It's a continental style oven (burners at the bottom of…

Boiler losing pressure... advice
Hi folks, We bought a 1930's semi last year and paid a local plumber/gas man to install a combi boiler (previously it was a back boiler). This was fitted in the loft and the existing rads and pipework were altered to convert it to a 'sealed' system which I gather is to do with current building regs/best practice. The…

Online Antique Valuations?
Owing to a few deaths in the family and downsizing the family home, my mother has a lot of vintage items that nobody wants. There are just so many bits and pieces but we have no real idea of what things are worth and what some of the things are. Is there a good place for online valuations like an antiques forum? I know…

Conservatory replacement
My house has an ugly, disproportionately large conservatory attached, added by a previous owner, at least 10 years ago. I don't know whether it ever had planning permission. It's a poor quality thing in every respect. Most importantly, the foundations of the conservatory have moved, so it now slopes a bit. It is isolated…

Cleaning Mould from Espresso Maker
Any ideas on how I could clean mould from inside an espresso maker? Its been sat in a cupboard for 8 months but now I've pulled it out in the hope of selling it (unwanted gift) I've noticed the cupboard is mouldy at the back and as the electric steamer is covered in mould I'm sure the espresso maker is affected too.…
