What to sit a glass fish tank on..?

Options
Fancy having some more fish in the back garden, but I want the tank to be within a planter..

Easy enough to build a planter with timber (extra support to hold the soil) and then clad it witgh deck boards. but just wondering if there was a way of having a glass front?

Or could I sit a normal glass fish tank on a layer of sand or polystyrene, build a timber box around the back and sides to keep the soil away from it.

The glass front will then be on show.

I could even get a sheet of toughened glass to place infront of the front piece if you get me?

A bit unusual - what are you going to do about frost/freezing?

A pond is more protected and normally only frosts over on the surface so the fish can drop down to the deeper waters, if you had a tank with all the sides exposed presumably it could freeze on the sides or even freeze solid.

Its an interesting idea but I cant help wondering that if it was practical then why isnt there something similar sold in garden centres....i have to agree with the previous poster over the freezing issues and wonder if its more for your benefit than the welfare of the fish...sorry.

Perhaps a chat with a supplier of fish might be the way to go to seek their opinions.

  • the sides wouldnt be exposed - I misseed that bit out. They would be packed around the edges and there would be lots of plants etc.

would it be a large enough body of water to protect them from cold and overheating?

tbh, I'm not sure if this is practical

  • Yes, it would be about 4 ft long, 2 ft wide and about 3 ft deep.
