Ordered new fridge - didn't work!
I'm not certain if this is the right thread for this, so please forgive me if it isn't and mods feel free to move it if necessary. I figured as it's not quite about my consumer rights, more about the product. We ordered a new fridge-freezer from a local, not major chain, store. It's a rather expensive one, but we needed…

Conservatory advise needed
Sorry of this is the wrong place to post but................ The wife has finally nagged me into submission and it looks like we are going to have a conservatory built but now we need to decide between a polycarbonate roof or one of these new Solaroof/Activ Blue type glass roofs. I prefer the look of glass but was a little…

Hi everyone, I bought a new house and there is a living room of 22 sqm in it. I want to make it all wooden floor, but was told by the sales man the minimum spending would be 800 pounds. That is above my budget a little bit. Is there any way to save a little bit to make everything done within a budget of 500? I know nothing…

What do you think of this kitchen design?
We're designing a new kitchen and are looking for some feedback as although the kitchen designers do try I always feel they're a little scared to say when an idea is stupid. While we do plan on staying in this house for 7 years+ and we think the design meets our current needs and would be fine when we had kids we wouldn't…

What is my ceiling made of and what should I do to it?
Hi everyone, following a leak part of our ceiling fell down. We have been advised to pull the whole thing down (which will make some scheduled electricial work easier) and then get it plasterboarded over. Primarily, we want to know what the ceiling is made of just to make sure it isn't asbestos. We were expecting lath and…

Electrical trunking
I've viewed a couple of properties that have obviously had what I term cheap electrical work carried out as they have that horrid trunking around walls and across ceiling. What I'd like to know is if you have a property with this kind of thing and want to be rid of as I would, do you have to go for a full rewire or is it…

Much ado about underlay
Hi All, I would like to ask what is the best kind of underlay to get for; * Bedroom * Stairs and upstairs landing We're getting Berber style carpets for both areas. Photographs of Liverpool...?
Hi all, Since moving into the boys Ive erm, 'redecorated' a little.Needless to say, a lot of his 'football memorabilia' has been removed ;) We've come to the compromise that he can have some framed prints of 'Liverpool' things up - we've got three black 6x4 frames to fill. The idea is to have some nice black and white…

Planning and budgeting house renovations
Hi everyone, I am wondering if there is any advice for planning and budgeting for house renovations. The house we are in the process of buying (touch wood the sale goes through) is a 1930s build in great condition but with a lot of updating that needs to happen. It is mostly superficial. Some of the works we will need to…

turning loft into a usable room
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to turn a loft into a usable room (for storage) but with a proper staircase installed rather than just a pull down ladder or if to get a real staircase we would need to go for a full blown loft conversion. Budget is tight and i have nerve damage in my leg that makes climbing ladders…

Faulty multipoint lock - now trapped indoors
Last night I unlocked my french door from inside my house and found that I'm unable to open the door. The main problem is that the top pin (multipoint lock) that locks the door (when you turn the door handle up) does not retract into the french door when I turn the handle. Furthermore I cannot lock my french door anymore…

Tesco Insulation Offer
After seeing this in this week's email, I thought it was a great idea and registered. I was so disappointed to receive a letter today saying that it is not possible for me " as they have no installers in this area" - fair enough if I lived somewhere remote, but I live on the south side of Glasgow! Just wondered whether…

Am I causing unnecessary damage to the walls?
Please help as I really don't know what I'm doing. I bought my first house last year (mid-terraced Victorian). I'd guess by the style of the decor that the last time it was decorated was in the 70s. I'm not shy of hard work and enthusiasm but am sadly lacking in skill and know-how. I've started stripping the wallpaper off…
