What do you think of this kitchen design?

We're designing a new kitchen and are looking for some feedback as although the kitchen designers do try I always feel they're a little scared to say when an idea is stupid. While we do plan on staying in this house for 7 years+ and we think the design meets our current needs and would be fine when we had kids we wouldn't want a horrible layout putting off future buyers.

The layouts not perfect but although the area isn't tiny it is quite hard to fit units in some place.

The cupboards in the peninsula, I'd have the doors on the dining room side. More accessible for bowls/dishes etc when laying the table. And the corner cupboard wouldn't be accessible from the kitchen so you'd end up with stuff at the back of the cupboard you never get out as it's too hard to reach.

Thanks, we did think that and are considering half and half - one facing in and the other out.

The only floor is no off the shelf kitchens do 700 wide pan drawers
but if your getting your doors made to measure thats not a prob
  • You could add a curve at either and of the penisular to make it look really nice and keep it safe for children.

We'll curve or cut the corners off the peninsula edges but as this was done quickly by me in sketchup rather than a specific kitchen design tool I didn't bother.

Some places have 700mm pan drawers others don't which is annoying as we'd prefer not to lose the space.

Good idea about double sided doors, not sure how the cabinets would look inside then but we could just make a cabinet I suppose or cut down a bigger one so it didn't look bad where the back is removed.

we may also curve the actual peninsula unit itself too but not too sure we want to lose the space there.
  • Maybe not the big diy stores but a lot of companies do a double sided cabinet.
If you are getting it from a company that doesnt do it, with the right tools it isnt to tricky to cut the grooves off where the backpanel sits and re edge

I wouldn't put the oven into a corner, it's harder to get to and it often burns/marks or disfigures the corner unit frontal.
With a Le mans style corner solution you need to make sure the door opens fully to get the mechanism out.
You might not get this with the oven door handle near the corner.

I'd swap it with the concealed draws.

Depending on the work top type I'd make a bit more of a feature on the breakfast bar area...

Good point about the le mans/door problem. We really wanted the oven on that wall so we can cook and still be able to talk to people in the dining area or sitting at the breakfast bar (and don't want the hob there as we want to sit at it too).

Surely with the le mans these would expect to be next to a unit with handles and the oven we are looking at (link) has a normal sized handle. It is also triple glazed so hopefully should be pretty cool to touch. I would consider swapping it with the unit next to it but then the extractor is at the end of the unit run which might look odd. Is the burn/door opening problem really that bad?

we did think about putting the oven in the middle of the two le mans and the hob where it is currently marked which does solve those problems but would it look odd having the hob/oven separate but so close?
