A plastering realated question
Good morning all I have re-boarded my kitchen ceiling this weekend ahead of a plasterer coming to skim it at the end of the week. Where two of the boards meet, there is about an inch gap where i unfortunately made a mistake when cutting the measurements. Should i prepare this for the plasterer ahead of time and what is the…

New washing machiine
Not sure if this belongs in this forum but is kind of OS My 12 year old washing machine is on the blink and will cost £60 - £70 to fix. That's the second time this year that it needs that amount spending on it. It has been costing about £60 a year to keep going over the last 5 years or so. So do I buy a new one (which will…

Quickest way to defrost a freezer?
I have defrosted my freezer once before, took me about 7 hours and it was still only half done. Then my lovely husband tells me that I should have turned the power off  Anyway, I need to do it again after only half doing it last time. Is there a 'quick' way to do it? Obv I will turn the power off, but how quickly can…

intermittent cold shower Brrrrr
Hi Peeps, We have a mixer type shower and mostly it works fine. Except lately it is only lukewarm at best if the heating is on as well as the hot water. We have a Worcester heat slave oil boiler. It has a small tank with about ?80 litres of water storage (I think) which was just about enough to get a nice hot shower…

builders here 8:00. Neighbour complains 8:00:45
Oh dear :( Neighbour, well known by the rest of the road for his difficult attitude, raced over here no more than a minute after the builders had parked up in their transit, to moan about where they had parked. Didn't have a chance to explain that they had literally just got out of the van & that I would ask them to move,…

Radiators only get warm
We are renting a new build property for a few months and unfortunately the development company is the reluctant landlord after running into financial difficulties and so fairly poor at dealing with issues etc. The radiators in the property never get very hot, the only two that get close to hot is the towel rails in the…

NEFF U1420 oven gone cold
Half way through cooking today's roast our Neff main oven stopped circulating hot air. Fortunately we were able to complete cooking the dinner in the smaller top oven, which is working properly. The main ovens fans are working but as stated above the oven is not circulating hot air. So I am guessing that the heating…

Recurring cold radiator
Anyone got any good ideas why a radiator would be cold? The radiator is in a rental house. We noticed it was cold when the old tenants moved out so. 1. I bled all the radiators. 2. I shut down all the other radiators and ran the central heating on full blast. 3. I bled this one some more - until eventually I got hot water…

Kitchen Extractor Fan
Hi, I moved into a new house this year and we have a problem with the kitchen extractor fan. The problem is that it doesn't extract anything, it just recirculates. Is it easy to change for one that extracts air? It is placed against an external wall, which I guess helps. Also, is this a job that an DIY novice could attempt…

I'm planning to install in the kitchen / dining room, and I was wondering whether any one had any experience with the poly pipe overlay underfloor heating or similar for going over exising floors. This is to go over an existing concrete floor and will have slate tiles on top any advice greatly appreciated :)

Just bought a repo- advice on works.
Hi all, Just bought a house and will be collecting keys this week hopefully! It's my first time buy and I'm a newbie at DIY. I've gone about getting the place the wrong way in that I have no money to fix it up and it does need a bit of work. I'm hoping over the course of the year I can slowly save and spend on works but…

rough % for retention fee for building work?
Is there a rough rule of thumb to calculate what sort of % one should retain for building work ? The builder we'd like to take on is offering 2% to be paid upon building regs final sign off & a further 2% to be paid after 8 weeks of occupancy. Does that sound acceptable? TIA
