Kitchen Extractor Fan

Hi, I moved into a new house this year and we have a problem with the kitchen extractor fan. The problem is that it doesn't extract anything, it just recirculates. Is it easy to change for one that extracts air? It is placed against an external wall, which I guess helps.
Also, is this a job that an DIY novice could attempt or should I look at getting somebody in to do it? I'm keen to have a go myself and money is pretty tight at the moment.
Thanks,
Lenny.

is there a hole in the wall and does it have an outside vent?Get some gorm.0

I think you'll struggle to drill a 4 or 5" hole through the external wall without the proper tools (240V drill with clutch and diamond core drill). Best to get a builder to do it. If you're handy you could do the rest - which is basically just ducting.
Check your existing extractor is suitable for venting outside - some IIRC are only for recirculation0 -
There is no hole in the wall currently. Sounds like it will probably be best to get someone in who has the tools. There are a few more odd-jobs that need doing so I'll phone a local odd-job man to see if he can do them all at once.
Thanks for the help.Save £6k in 2015 - Jan £5000 -

Hi, I'm trying to find out if my fan is suitable for venting outside. How can I tell? I'm struggling to find it on the internet. Is there a way of checking on the fan itself?
Thanks,

Do you have the instruction booklet?
What is the make and model. You may have to remove the filter to find this information. It's usually on a sticker on the fan assembly. If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button!0 -
I don't have the instructions I'm afraid. The fan was already there when we moved in over the summer.
I have taken the fan cover off and it just says 'Imported by CNA Trading Appliances Ltd' and has the code CHK6055.Save £6k in 2015 - Jan £5000 -
Does it look like any of these:If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button!0

Are you sure that CHK6055 isn't the charcoal filter code? I think you may have one that isn't designed to vent to the outside. Its designed , as you have noticed, to recirculate. replacing the filters might be a good plan to see if that improves performance.

Myser, yes it looks like the second one down. Keystone, not sure replacing the filters will help as it was brand new when we moved in. I think the issue is more that we need it to extract. We have an open-plan affair downstairs and are getting condensation problems so need to switch to an extractor.Save £6k in 2015 - Jan £5000

Its not a complex affair to bore a hole in the wall to take the extracor ducting. Its DIYable if you have the skill or any handyman will be able to do the job.
It's very rare to get an extractor that isn't set up for extraction as well as recirculation.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0
