Triton Electric Shower tripping mains???
Hi - My wife had a shower this morning. After she had her turn I had mine. After a few seconds the main board tripped - all electrics out. I reset and tried again with the same result - the board trips within a couple of seconds. This evening I've tried again - the shower runs fine on cold but as soon as I turn it to power…

Electric fly killers

Yet another kitchen question! Finding the right independant.
This is my first actual post but I've done a lot of reading over the last six months especially with regards to kitchen installation. We've got a bit of money saved up and are looking at replacing our aging kitchen. It will involve a bit of work on the walls and floors and a tiny bit of structural work (knocking out a…

Is cavity wall insulation a good idea?
Sorry if this has been covered; I did a search but could not find an answer. We were going to have cavity insulation done for our 1982-built house but when I was reading up on the different types available (fibre, foam, beads) I came across this article: http://www.askjeff.co.uk/cavity.html This guy is clearly putting…

Help needed for finding a new Electric Boiler
I was wondering if people could give me some advice. My boiler's been breaking down regularly over the last 12 months which I guess means it's time for a new one. I've only got electricity in my 2-bed flat so it has to be electric. I don't have central heating, so only really require hot water for showers, washing up and…

Breach of Ground Rent T & C - Punative Charge?
10 years ago we had an extension built, went through the full planning permission/legal bit at the time. We overlooked informing the company to who we pay ground rental. This costs £12.60 a year and is paid by direct debit so is not something we have been overly concerned about. They must have been looking around the…

Question about furniture restoration
Do we have any experts here? ;) A year or so ago we bought an aging chest of drawers via eBay. It's a lovely piece of furniture; a bit battered, but that just adds to its character. I prefer this to perfect, brand new stuff. Problem is, the top surface has gone all odd! I don't know what it's coated with - lacquer, varnish…

Drain blocked, but cannot access inspection chamber
We seem to have a blockage in the drain from our house. Unfortunately the previous owner installed decking over where the inspection chamber appears to be, and has done such a good job I can't shift it without damaging the boards. Our house has a 2 pipe wastewater system. I can access the yard gully which doesn't appear to…

Is a electrical (Part P) certificate required for this?
As per title, does the folllowing need to be certified? - Adding various additional sockets and lighting on existing circuit/loom (probably not the technical term!), without creating an additional loom from the fuse box. My intuitition is that if you a lift a finger these days then it needs to be signed off, but this…

Downstairs Toilet Bad Smell - any ideas
Hi all, Our toilet room downstairs has a bad smell leaking from somewhere. As far as I can tell, it started shortly after I got some handymen to lay down laminate flooring. The 2 things that happened were that the water mains was switched off and that they removed the whole toilet to laminate underneath. I reported the…

Anyone here an Electrician?
I have a query, I don't want to burn my flat down or blow the breakers. I only have 2 sockets at either side of my bedroom and I am having trouble running my PC and other equipment. I had an idea of getting 2 x 6 individually switched socket gang extensions, both with surge protection, how safe is it to have them both…

70 year old neighbour being ripped off by roofer 'friend', what should I do?
Hi, I recently had my roof re-done (felt installed) and after several quotes all around £3000-£6000 for a 3 bed semi I was pleased to accept a qoute for £3,400 who had the best references. They did the whole job in 4 days and did a cracking job. (I inspected it daily to see what they had done and how well they had done…
