Want to extend but don't know where to start
I am being made redundant in 2 months time. I will have £20,000 and have decided to build an extention to the family home. I have absolutely no idea how to get the rough estimate without architects plans. I don't want to commission plans I can't afford to build. Catch 22. My idea is a garage, downstairs sitting room and…

How much is a fair price for removals?
As I'm moving soon I had someone round today to quote for removals. The journey to my new place is around 15-20 minutes from where I live now and I have the standard amount of furniture you'd expect to find for a 1 bedroom property ... I have been quoted £200 and this includes loading up from old property and unloading at…

Anyone else watching Mervyn King's speech?
Got to be one of the most sensible speeches I have heard on the UK economy in a long time. We need to borrow less, save more, watch inflation which he has said could rise steeply and that house price inflation will be 'less buoyant'. Listening to him you wouldn't assume that there will be any interest rate cuts, let alone…

Want to rent my house but not got a BTL mortgage. Problem???
I'm thinking of renting my house out, but have only recently signed up to a 5 year repayment mortgage. Does anyone know where i stand legally with renting out my house? If i do rent it out then it wouldn't bring in enough to cover the mortgage. Should i change to an interest only? would i incurr early repayment charges or…

From homeowner to tenant - are we doing the thing?
Myself and OH have been living together for nearly 10 years now, in 1999 we bought a house for around £28,000, it is estimated that it is now worth around £70,000 (ish, we havent had it valued, just going by other homes in the area). The problems are, it is only a 2 bedroomed terraced and since buying the house, we have…

What should I do - Renting
I'm currently 21 and live with my parents (paying rent). We have been given a date of Mid March to move out of current rented property. I am trying to decide what to do. I am planning on travelling within the next year so don't want to burden my parents by moving out shortly after finding a new house. I have looked at…

Condition of sale-no reduction on price whatever the outcome of survey
I put an offer of £ 131k for a house marketed at £142.5 k. This has now been accepted but with the condition that the vendor will not reduce the price after survey. In other words, anything that might be found in the survey can not be used to negotiate the price down. I understand the vendor may not want to reduce the…

Interest Rate move - Feb 08
So, after today's move by the Fed, what will the MPC decide in February? What odds are the bookies offering for a 0.75% or 1% cut? At this early stage I'd guess at them shaving 0.25% off the base rate. EDIT: Just one hour later and, after reading Merv's speech, I change my forecast to a more significant 0.5% :) GG

Any Advice?
(OK, first of all I'm a student so it can get moved into the student forum if you see fit.) I'm wanting to move out of home next year and rent a flat in Glasgow. The plan was to move in with a couple of mates, but they're both wanting to stay in Unite accommodation and I don't. So, looks like I'm going to have to find my…

Renting Contract...now in temporary contract
After completing the 6 months rent contract, I understand that I am now in a temporary contract where I can just give 1 months notice before I want to leave or will be given 2 months notice if the LL wants me to move out. I intend to stay for a longer than 6 months but when I moved in, the letting agency told me that the…

It's not right for me
I moved last August into a small property in a fairly semi rural area (cost £217,500). The move was a disaster with far more work required than anticipated, which did not appear on my survey. I have however now spent approx. £12000 carrying out the necessary works, i.e. rewiring, replacing guttering, fascia boards etc.,…
