nPower current tariff exit penalty
My current tariff with nPower has an exit penalty attached if I switch to another tariff or to another provider. However I vaguely recall reading that if a provider announces tariff increases then you are entitled to switch penalty-free - is that true? Am I mis-remembering something else?

How to boil a kettle, with min. water, without ruining it!
Here is a tip for people with standard flat element (not old style curly) kettles. I take no notice of the 'min' marker. If I only need one cup of water, that is all I heat. You could use the cup to measure it out or just judge from experience. Nothing new in that , you may say. The key thing when heating such small…

Variable DD with Scottish Power
Hi Just in the process of switching to Scottish Power for their online fixed to 2014 deal and said that I wanted to be on a variable monthly DD. They apparently don't do these on a montly basis but only on a quarterly basis and then if you do the unit cost goes up! I prefer to pay for what I use but I don't want to have to…

I currently have my heating on for 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the evening - my gas useage for this is approx 48kwh per day... does this sound right??? This seems so high. Any recommendations for energy monitors?
I'm concerned that our electricity consumption is too high. Have switched on MSE advice to the Scottish Power fixed tarrif, and the lady from EON who phoned me to ask me to stay mentioned that our electricity bill was way high. We have gas heating and hob, so I can't see an obvious reason why our electricity is so high. I…

British Gas letter this morning
Hello all, I feel a bit late to the saving party of fixing costs but I'm here now! :) British Gas wrote to us this morning to outline their fix offer - we could fix at current price and if the standard cost falls, so will our bills. If we leave BG before end of fix period, we get charged £20. Wow. Essentially: We'll put…

Help in understanding what tarrif
Hi all, Apologies for what is probably an obvious question, but I am a new home-owner, having never paid for electric (or gas) before and not really having much understanding of how they work. The property that i bought was a new build 2 bedroom apartment. It does not have gas, electric only. The supplier was British gas…

Smart meters
I came across this one while looking for a new electricity contract for next year. "...that's 20p per day extra for the smart meter" so I said "just a minute, that's in addition to the standing charge. But you didn't supply the meter, it was provided free by a previous supplier and you're suggesting that you charge an…
