Hi we had a phone call from SSE saying our meter needed upgrading. The new meter was installed yesterday morning at 11am.I checked the reading and it was on 8

I have just checked again and it is at 221.Surely that cant be right after 28 hours? We live in a normal 3 bed semi if that helps

    That does sound rather high.
It's abut my monthly use, but I'm a low user.
    You sure it's not 22.8?
    What were your bills?
  • I'd have thought not - get in touch with SSE so they can come out and check it.

Definitely reading 221 and not 22.1?
  • The person who changed the meter should have left a card or sticker near the meter giving the old and new meter readings, does the new one show as 000008?j

Hi thanks for the prompt replies.Yes its definately 221 not 22.1 and yes there is a card stating 000008

I have rang them and they are sending someone out.We have a voltemizer thing on it so maybe thats caused it to go haywire

    Thanks again
  • So your first five digits are 00221, you have put the first five as a start as 00000, ( the 8 is nt used ). I take it that its a digital meter. Only the first five digits are used, ignore the sixth

A lot of modern meters such as Ampy digits have 6 digits instead of 5 and should be read. LBSL use these but prior to them they were very common in the Midland regions for years which might be why you don't see them in your region.

Its possible to have domestics with up to about 9 I think...I know I've seen 7 & 8 before but they are very rare.

OP - sounds like its speeding so its needs a Standard Load Test (SLT) to determine if its out of tolerance. Then they wil, want to work out a bill so I suggest you scrutinise this to ensure its as expected.

As the meter will have only been on the wall a few days I suspect they wont bother to bill for that period, too much work for to little gain.

    It just gets worse

Last month I bought a new car and at collection time the salesman spent 20mins runnning through all the controls.
As I had an appointment to keep, about halfway thro' this lesson I said "OK, I'll read the manual and I'd like to go now", to which the salesman replied he had a legal duty to do the whole thing - which on reflection is sensible.

The flip side of this coin is that meters are installed, changed or inherited with a property, with absolutely zero by way written instructions
Even with replies from experienced responders on this site, rich11still can't be certain how to read his new meter, so heaven help those with Digital meters that have multi-function buttons with 'Press & Wait' features.

If I mislay the manual for my dishwasher I can go on the web and download another from the makers website - So if the meter manufactureres still think an instruction leaflet with each meter is an expense too far, it ain't rocket science to put a label on the meter offering a download from their website

Best advice to Rich 11 is to write to his supplier asking for written confirmation from them as to which numbers are to read and which are to be ignored - That way when in a few years time when the supplier recalculates all his billing because the wrong number has been ignored, or no numbers should have been ignored, he's got his tail covered

Type the meter details (make/model) into Google and normally you'll everything you need. With most meters it is clear which digits are and aren't part of the reading submitted to suppliers.

In terms of the number of digits, that simple.

For gas, the supplier gets confirmation. For elec, its everything left of the decimal with a transmittable limit of, I think without checking, is 9.

If you mean scrolling through registers...you won't find information like that anywhere with newer digital that tell you this because its the Meter Operators that add them so the manufacturer can only record the scrolling functions.

For the functions, as Spiro says, you can Google for some but a lot of the older ones are hard to find.

If you contact your supplier, they don't know either because no one is ever sent any manuals. That used to happen over 10 years ago but it all stopped and privatisation of Meter Operators meant all the old agreements broke up.

Supplier staff really struggle with the registers in transposition cases.
