Help in understanding what tarrif
Hi all,
Apologies for what is probably an obvious question, but I am a new home-owner, having never paid for electric (or gas) before and not really having much understanding of how they work.
The property that i bought was a new build 2 bedroom apartment. It does not have gas, electric only. The supplier was British gas and when I rang up to set up payments etc they estimated my usage to be around £56 per month. I elected to pay by direct debit and pay £60 as I didnt want to be in debit at all.
I was put on to the clear and simple plan. My plan was to have a couple of months in the flat, and then have a shop around to see if there would be a better tarrif.
Having received the letter to say the pirces are going up, British gas are offering to fix the new rates until 2013. However I did a quick search today online and found that NPower are quoting around £40pm to go with them. This was based on medium usage (which to be fair is probably over egging it a bit but as before would rather estimate over than under).
Anyway, just looking for a little bit of advice as this is so new to me, would i be better to have a few months of British gas so i can collect meter readings etc or should I switch asap?

as an additional point, when I look on British Gas website at the clear and simple plan, it estimates that the average monthly bill is £40. When they calculated my estimation I told them I had 4 heaters (electric panel) 1 washer / dryer and there are 2 people living in the property.
I would of thought this would not be too extreme?2019 Totals: Savings: £929.53 / Mortgage OP - £746.32

So both suppliers are quoting the same £40 p.m for your estimated usage?
Why change?0 -
British gas had quoted £56. It is only on there website it states a normal bill would be around £40 on the tariff I am on. They did not quote that to me.2019 Totals: Savings: £929.53 / Mortgage OP - £746.32

But you are not comparing like with like.
You say on the BG website, average monthly bill is £40.
You say you assume you are a medium usage consumer and nPower quote £40 p.m.
If you are not currently overpaying, your assumption of usage must be wrong. Contact BG and ask on what consumptions level your current monthly payment is based.
If your assumption of usage is correct, what price did BG come out in the comparison you did on one of the comparison sites?0 -
ok, thanks for info, I will try to find out usage.2019 Totals: Savings: £929.53 / Mortgage OP - £746.32
