Jacket Potatoes

Options
Hi all

Im stuck. I usually blast my jacket potatoes before I stick em in the oven to crisp them up, but we dont have a microwave at present. How do I make them purely in the oven?

Depends on the size of the potato. I do big ones for about 90 minutes. I just !!!!!! them, rub with butter and put on a baking tray.

If you have metal skewers, they will cook a lot more quickly.

Before I had my microwave I would !!!!!! them then put them in the oven wrapped in tin foil till they are cooked then unwrap once cooked and put back in oven to crisp them up. My Nan always use to do what scottishflower does but I find they go a bit hard that way.

  • My fave way of doing Jacket Potatoes is to cook them in the oven for an hour. Take out - allow to cool long enough to handle. Cut in half lengthways, scoop out flesh, mash with cream, butter, and then add cheese, chopped mushrooms and bacon that have already been fried. Refill jacket skins with mixture and pop under hot grill until golden and bubbling. Lovely for bonfire night!!

I parboil potatoes in their skin for 15 mins - let cool a bit then skin them.

Half an hour on hot oven after coating them with oil and salt- they are fine.

Oooh I really shouldn't read these recipes when I'm starving!!
  • Ohhhh I'm starting to  at the thought of a yummy baked spud! :j

I like mine with really crispy skins so I bake them in a moderately hot oven for a couple of hours, putting them straight on the metal bars, no tray or anything - that's after pricking the skin so it doesn't burst then rubbing in a bit of olive oil and sprinkling coarse sea salt on them :D

I've tried microwaving them but they just steam inside their jackets and come out all soggy :( ... even popping in the oven for a while afterwards doesn't get them as crispy as I like

I rub mine over with butter and wrap in foil, cook for 15 mins on high then unwrap and cook on tray for rest of time, depending on size of potato, butter gives the skins a nicer flavour

If you put a skewer through the potato lengthwise, the metal will heat up and pass the heat directly into the potato which will bake more speedily. You can still cook it to Delia's standards, but saving time and oven energy.
