    Hi

I would like to bake jacket potatoes tonight. I usually put them in microwave for 10/15 mins then finish in oven but they just don't turn out right. I love them crispy on the outside and really fluffy on the inside. Yum yum! How do you bake yours?:p

    Sorry if in wrong section.

Microwaves don't cook jacket potatoes according to my tastes, even if I finish them off in the oven. I put them in the oven for between 1 and 1.5 hours depending on the size.

I find that King Edwards, Maris Piper and Desiree make nice jackets!

put them on a baking tray with a layer of salt.
    no tinfoil!
the salt absorbs moisture from the potato so makes it fluffy and no tinfoil lets the skin crispen.

and for moneysaving ;) just let the salt cool and put it in a tub for the next time you do baked potatoes :)

I rub mine with oil and sprinkle with salt to get them really crispy.
My son loves jacket potatoes but won't eat the skin, so I take out all the potato and mix it with the filling and serve it to him like that.

Then the next day for my lunch, i have his left over potato skin deep fried with a dip. Yum!! Recycling at its best :D

i do mine in the microwave for about 4-5mins per a potatoe them leave them under a medium grill for about 6-8mins to get crispy skins. Find the heat from a grill makes its cook a bit sweeter than just a microwave alone.
I thinking cooking in the oven is okay if using for other food otherwise its time consuming and uses more gas than a grill would do.

  • This is what we used to do before microwaves, to speed up cooking and to save fuel. Plunge (love that word!) sport-smiley-001.gifa fork into each potato, so that the prongs go deep into every potato-y heart. Now put them in a hottish oven, as normal, and this is what happens: the forks get very hot and start to cook the spuds from inside, so you've got a duel action thingy going on, and cooking time is greatly reduced. When they are done, use the fork handles (four candles?) to take them out, but please use an oven glove, my darling !speechless-smiley-040.gif

PS you could also use a metal skewer, but four prongs seems more fuel efficient.
