I find the type of potatoes you use makes a difference. I've always had good results wih Maris Pipers, rather than the ones marketed by the supermarkets as "baking potaotes".
I try to do them in the oven for an hour on a low-ish heat, then turn it up for the last 20-30 minutes. We usually have them with casseroles, so the oven's on anyway.0 -
best ones I ever had, had been left in the oven for hours and hours on a low heat. They were brown inside but tasted fantastic. Next time I use the slow cooker I might chuck in some potatos wrapped in foil and see what happens.SIMPLE SIMON - Met a pie man going to the fair. I pierce them all over with a corncob skewer and sprinkle a little salt on them. I wrap each one in tinfoil and cook for approx 1.5 hours depending on size on Gas 5 or Gas 7 if in a hurry. Very nice!0

The oven method is undoubtedly the best, but it does take an awfully long time and a lot of electricity. Just microwaving them is quick and economical, but doesn't do anything to the skin. Delia Smith has a combination method, which does give a reasonable result in a reasonable time: do them in the microwave first (wash, stab all over and wrap in kitchen paper, then zap for 4-5 mins per spud depending on size), then rub them with oil (yes, they will be hot!) and then finish them off in the oven. The microwave cooks them from the inside out, and the oven basically fries the skin. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0

My dad use to put them in foil and put them under the bonnet when we went on holiday and when we got there they would be ready! They were great!0

Interesting. Might try that out of curiosity. I wonder if it imparts any heavy metals LOL!SIMPLE SIMON - Met a pie man going to the fair. Said Simple Simon to the pie man, "What have you got there?" Said the pie man unto Simon, "Pies, you simpleton!"0 -
I zap them in the microwave for about 8 minutes then set on a piece of tin foil, quirt with spray oil - or youcould brush with olive oil I guess - sprinkle on some salt, wrap the foil and bake in the over for about 40 minutes - perfectJan GC: £202.65/£450 (as of 4-1-12)

I have a metal stand thingy that I use. Makes them cook so much quicker in about an hour and really nice.
Got it in Morrisons for about 99p.

Hi
I would like to bake jacket potatoes tonight. I usually put them in microwave for 10/15 mins then finish in oven but they just don't turn out right. I love them crispy on the outside and really fluffy on the inside. Yum yum! How do you bake yours?:p
Sorry if in wrong section. If you want to do something, then the only thing holding you back is yourself, so get on and do it!:rotfl:0
