I have been with EDF for two years, online V3...quite happy until the last price rises. Found that prices had gone up 25% for both electricity and gas (luckily a recent bill)...so I thought TIME TO CHANGE - little bemused as they had only mentioned price rises of 7-12%!!!
Using switch companies to find alternatives...found out there was an online V5 available for EDF...rang EDF...information received was that it was for NEW CUSTOMERS Only...but also that all previous online version customers had been converted to standard tariffs (that accounts for the tremendous increases). WE have had no notification....by email or letter of this change, or any price changes.
So EDF online customers (V1 to V4), check...and vote with your feet - leave them, I will be, as will my mother and sister...
Stealth tactics...

Dont they have to notify you in writing? I've not heard anything. Are you sure they haven't just billed you incorrectly?
Last time they increased the prices I had a letter saying something about you could switch and not have the higher price applied.
Just checked on the comparison sites and it does look like they have had massive price hikes !!! British Gas are now £200 cheaper for me.0 -
Yes, they are supposed to notify us (didn't, not just me, also Mum and sister, therefore assuming no notification for anybody!!)...but can understand why they choose not to this time- think they are hoping we won't notice for 3 months!!
I spoke to customer services at EDF...they were the ones who confirmed the info that all online tariffs (V1-4) have been changed to standard tariff - confirmed by checking switch tariffs online, and customer services at EDF - no mistake on my bill
British Gas are likely to benefit, as you say...spread the word...0 -
I have received no letter or e mail or other communication about this. They are NOT able to increase there price without notification-I will resist any increase that is applied without prior notification to give me the option of making an informed switch.0

Just been on the Energywatch website, and apparently EDF have 65 days from the price rise to inform us...so no rush, right???
Think they will hope we will forget/ignore the price rise, as I am sure if they had told us immediately we would have been shocked at the price rise. By the time they tell us it will be long overdue to change supplier...
I for one am appalled by EDF's stealth tactics...anyone??? Thoughts?0 -
I have sent them an email asking the question about the increase in their online tarriffs this is the reply they have sent me:
Thank you for your e-mail.
We will be increasing our prices for Online tariff versions 1, 2, 3, and 4 with effect from Friday 1 February 2008. The increases vary by version, area and payment type and will not exceed 20%.
Letters will be sent to inform customers from 4 February 2008.
To request the price increase for your tariff or for further information contact our Customer Service Team on 0800 096 9000
I will be phoning them tommorrow to see how much the increases are0 -
My prices have increased at a minimum of 20%...the rate for the first units of gas has increased by 33%...the remaining units by 21%.
For electricity the first units by 26% and remaining units by almost 20%...how does that fit with their maximum of 20%.
I am Norweb area...interested to hear when they contact you.0 -
I checked the letter the last time they raised prices circ. 27th July 2007. The letter was dated August 2007 and said you could inform them within 14 days if you wanted to transfer and they would 'NOT' charge the increased rates.
Guess what i will be doing !
How can they change online to standard?0 -
Letter arrived 5 min's ago regarding the price rise
New tariff for V3 Online SW Scotland is
Electricity first 225kw 13.67 and 14.35 inc vat
all other units 8.13 and 8.54 inc vat
Gar first 1465 3.843 and 4.035 inc vat
all other units 2.416 and 2.537 inc vat
You can notify them your are changing suppliers and will not charge price hike all in the small print.0 -
Just had my letter this morning. I'm on Online V3, East Midlands.
Electricity, first 225kWh 13.81 inc VAT
all other units 7.51 inc VAT
Gas, first 1465 kWh 4.035 inc VAT
all other units 2.537 inc VAT
For me, this is a 16.8% increase for electricity, and 21.3% for gas.
Yes, we have 14 days in which to switch without incurring these increases, but Martin is still telling us to wait before switching because some providers have yet to announce their increases.

Npower have been using this underhand trick for some time now. Enticing customers with a low online tariff, then after a while replacing it with another one and using any price increase/decrease to gradually adjust the old tariff to be virtually the same as the standard tariff.
I think they get round the legal aspect by still calling the tariff by the old name (not standard) even though it is virtually the same as the standard one.
No help to you I know, but at least you are not alone.0
