Tesco and/or Morrisons contaminated Petrol
This is currently being mentioned on BBC news 24. Not seen anything on any websites including the BBC news one. Lots of people are having problems after filling up at either Tescos or Morrisons. The problem leads to engines failing to run due to faulty O2 sensors. Apparently there are concerns the petrol may be contaminated. Apparently the problem affects premium unleaded petrol.
Hopefully if you have not heard about this it will help you identify any problems after filling up. Apparently the supermarkets should be liable for any repair bills if it can be proven the petrol was faulty, but this is likely to be difficult to do.
I am concerned myself after filling up at Tescos, but had no problems yet.
Read at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6405051.stm where there is also a form to report any known problems.

Apparently the South East and East Anglia are worst affected, though have heard of reports in Basingstoke.

However, news 24 says text messgaes sent to the program have claimed problems are occurring elsewhere too.0 -
Its a bit of a worry, if anyone gets an O2/Cat warning light up on the dash there sometimes are some easier cures (post in the motoring section)
As a temporary measure I would recommend people either purchase well known brands, or perhaps go to Tesco 99RON as this is refined in a different way and I have not heard of anyone having problems with this yet.Praying at the church of MSE should be compulsory!

Esso and BP refine Tesco's petrol, so howcome their own petrol has not been reported as giving trouble??0

Damn, pressed Thanks instead of Quote - again!
It may not be a problem with the refining process.
Tesco only care about profit. To maximise profit, they buy any fuel that meets MINIMUM legal standards. This removes any margin for error.
We'll have to wait and see.

You obviously don't remember a few years ago when a cleaning additive added to Shell petrol, was causing serious engine damage to certain manufacturers engines!

I've had this problem. I filled up at a Tesco just outside Cambridge 10 days ago and on Saturday it broke down. It limped to the garage on Monday and is now sat waiting for a new O2 sensor to arrive from Vauxhall. When I took it in the mechanic asked me if I'd filled up at Tesco, so this has obviously been known about for a few days.
If it is the petrol to blame are there any grounds for claiming the repair costs from Tesco?0
