claiming fees back in northern ireland?

Options
Hi I've just been reading a bit about claiming the bank charges back from your bank, I was just wanting to know if anyone in northern ireland has tried this with any of our banks, and also if my account conduct has been poor, what are the chances of me actually getting any money back of these banks. I'm with the bank of Ireland, who sent me a letter last week saying they were stopping charges on their accounts from the !st October, and yesterday I received a letter saying that because of my acount conduct, they are closing my account. Just seems to me they were happy with my account conduct when they were making money out of me :(

Good question! I understand that the rules apply to banks in England and Wales, although the banks in Northern Ireland do have obscure charges. I got fed up with being charged £4.50 to set up, amend or cancel a direct debit with the Bank Of Ireland, and moved my account to First Direct. I haven't looked back since, I didn't realise how bad the service was until I moved.

Good luck, though. And in my experience, the service that you get can only get better.

I think there was some discussion on this in the NI forum, maybe head over there for a search.

    Cheers, Des.

Just to add to this, I was successful with Nationwide without having to resort to a court summons. A friend who I was helping with hers was with first trust and she did have to send a court order although was then settled in full before it went any further.

Theres no problems going ahead with it in Northern Ireland

I worked for Northern for 30 years so I would advise yoou to write to the Chief Executive, rather than your branch - they probably wont be concerned about potentially losing your account if it 1snt that great but they will be worried about the bad publicity as they have taken a battering from the complaint by Which. I would go ahead with it and if necessary issue a court order.
    Write to

    Northern Bank Limited

If you live or work near the city centre I would hand deliver the letter - side door entrance facing Jaegar. Good luck - I'd love to hear how you get on.

Well.......we wrote our letter last night and am sending it recorded delivery requesting a list of the penalty charges during the past 6 years!!
We had a business account with them so it would be very interesting to see the total amount of penalty charges.
I will probably faint from shock!!
We left the Northern Bank almost 3 years ago and would advise others to do so the same.

Citibank have recently won a case against a claimant in Northern Ireland.

They sprung a last minute expert witness and the court allowed this.

  • Hi

I have read the articles on MSE's main website about claiming back bank charges and I notice it says under english & scottish law....

Does this work with the Northern Ireland banks?

    anyone tried it?

I want to do it on behalf of my brother who has had so many overdraft charges over the last few years from Bank of Ireland.

    thanks
