I got this in my email inbox and wondered if anyone had heard about this. The firm that sent it, claim to get it for you on a no win no fee basis, but why should we have to pay for what is rightfully ours. I have blanked out the name of the company.
I answer yes to all the questions, and I imagine alot of you will as well, so wonder how to go about getting this money back.
Parents - Does The Taxman Owe You £1,500?

Q2- Work and pay tax (or live with a partner who worked and paid tax) between April 2001 and April 2003?
Q3- Did the highest earner in the family earn £6,000+ in one or both years?

Why not have a look on the HMRC website and see. I haven't got time to look for you now but I will do it tonight if no-one has any luck but I would guess they are talking about unclaimed tax credits. These companies are out to make money from people for things they could do themselves. If you think you meet the above criteria why not simply write to HMRC and ask them. You will save yourself what is undoubtedly a rip off fee and get all the money owed to you instead of lining the pockets of someone else. In all probability, you have already received everything due to you but a short letter, possibly enclosing a copy of what is written above, will be a start in finding out.

This relates to the Child Tax Credit which is different to what we know now. It was essentially an improved tax code that meant those with children paid less tax, see below - it was scrapped whent he current tax credit legislation was introduced:
DO NOT GO THROUGH A COMPANY TO CLAIM IT!!! They will invariable charge you a fee when you can easily do it yourself with very little fuss.
My first was born in Feb 03 and I was unaware of this until my in laws told me. I gave them a call and they gave me £800 - even though we only had children for a fraction of the financial year.
Hope someone gets something out of it!

Has anyone had any joy in claiming this? I have been passed around all over the place and no-one at either the Tax Credits or the HMRC Office seems to know anything about the form needed to claim or where I can get it from.
As a last resort I have just written a strong letter to the Tax Credits Office at Preston asking why they are making it so difficult to claim this benefit.
Any other ideas greatly appreciated.
MSE deemed my original signature to be unacceptable so this is what I have to say in its place

Any idea how you tell if you have already recieved this. I looked on the website and it gives you a list of phone numbers but none of them seem to relate to where OH pays tax.

It can't be CTC because that didn't exist prior to April 2003 so you can't claim it in arrears.
Before CTC there was a tax allowance for parents, which meant you had a higher tax code than normal. I claimed it for a while and then when I gave up work I transferred it to my child's father (not married at that time) and he received it for a few years. As I recall it was worth about £5 a week.
My memory is a bit hazy but the Chancellor cancelled this allowance in 2001, or possibly 2002. There was a period where we got nothing, until CTC was introduced in 2003. I remember being a bit miffed that there was a time lag between benefits when we got nothing. We were on one low income at the time.
It all sounds a bit iffy but if anyone successfully claims some back payment, do please post about it in case there is money to be made. Share the news with MSE so we don't have to pay this firm

This was called CTC (different to the current childrens tax credit and much less lucrative) - it was an allowance that was given in the tax code when the Additional Personal Allowance and Married allowance were abolished. Most people that were entitled have already received this automatically..only a few slipped the net. NEVER go through anyone else to claim this - there was a form to claim the allowance at the time, but that is not necessary now- if you think you may not have received the extra tax allowance then first contact HMRC and ask them to check your previous tax codes (remember that the allowance could be claimed by either partner - so if you think you have not had it..check that your partner did not have it as you could only have one allowance per family) alternatively write to your tax office asking them to check. There was one year between when the Married allowance and Additional personal allowance were abolished and CTC was brought in that no additional allowances were available.

OK, I've been passed from pillar to post but finally rang my local tax office and was told that you need to check your Tax Coding Notices for the relevant period and it will be listed there as part of the explanation as to how your tax code was calculated.
just off to search through the paperwork....
update:
OK, I've found all the PAYE Coding Notices and this is what I found:
1999-2000 - Personal Allowance and Married Allowance
2000-2001 - Personal Allowance (only)
2001-2002 - Personal Allowance and Childrens Tax Credit note: there is also an entry for Childrens Tax credit rest'n
Unfortunately, we've already had this but it was a nice hope while it lasted.
Hope this helps others to find out whether or not they may have an outstanding claim.

The chidrens tax credit restriction was placed in your tax code tomake sure you only received 10% tax relief on the childrens tax credit(it was only given at 10%) if you had not had a restriction you would have received tax relief at your highest rate (either 22 or 40%)
i also have been passed from pillar to post, eventually i got through to my local tax office, you must explain it is tax relief you want to claim and not tax credit, they told me i had to write in and explain my query, the form 11TCT which i think everyone is looking for is obsolete, either that or she couldn't be bothered to look for it, which is more likely,

This looks very interesting as I can also answer Yes to all the questions. Do you have a link to the page on HMRC website that you printed please?
Presumably if you don't have all your coding notices (I'll bet OH has binned anything over a year or two old!)the Tax Office will have backdated records?
Thanks in advance!

See the link in the sixth reply down... You need to contact you local tax office and ask if your tax code was reduced when your child was born... if not then you are entitled to the money back... in effect a tax overpayment... they will include interest on the money they owe you too... you will have to write to them giving them details of you NI number... employer and a copy of childs birth certificate. i also printed off a copy of the HMRC website page explaining all about the CTC for those yrs.
I hope this helps.
