  • Does anyone know if my husband would be able to claim it for my daughter? We were not married at the time but we were living together in 2001 onwards and my daughter is now his step-daughter?

Have phoned the tax office and neither OH or I had it applied to our tax codes so have written a letter and will keep my fingers crossed.

Thanks to OP and subsequent posters for the info. I'll let you know how I get on

If I could second that post by natasha1153!
Need to write a letter also but have no idea what to put - when I mentioned it to my OH (quickly I admit!) he didn't get it anyway! A rough template would be very much appreciated.
We seem to do really badly on getting anything (by phoning or writing) so any advice would be appreciated.
    Many thanks
Thank you to everyone who posts comps! :A

We've just sent this letter (but not had a reply yet so don't know how successful it will be)! The screen shot mentioned in the letter below is the one a PP gave earlier on this thread. We simply sent this to my dh's tax office and are keeping everything crossed!

    Dear Sir/Madam

I was looking at the HMRC website recently and came across an article about claiming children’s tax credit for the years 2001-2003 (please see screen shot from your website enclosed). I do not recall either myself or my wife (Mrs **** **** *******) claiming this despite having two children under sixteen living with us during this period. I would be most grateful for your help in ascertaining if I can claim it now.

Please could you send me form 11CTC mentioned on your website or anything else I may need?

    Thanking you in anticipation

    Yours faithfully

when can you claim from 1985 like the first post says? any1 no as ill get my mam and dad to do it.

I'm not sure, but I think it means if you had a child born between 1985-2003 (this means that a child born in 1985 would have been 18 in 2003) not that you can claim this right back to 1985.

Thanks for that Nenen, I think we'll have to just send a letter as can't get through on the phone.

    hi amanda
can you give me some idea of what you put in your letter, i need to do mine and really have no idea how to word it.
    hope you can help
    many thanks

I phoned my local tax office first, confirmed that we had not received it and then wrote in as requested. Letter as below:

    Dear Sirs,

    Re: Children’s Tax Credit 2001-02 and 2002-03

Further to my telephone conversation with your office today, I understand that the Children’s Tax Credit income tax relief for people with children was not applied to either myself or my husband’s tax codes.

As parents of 3 children – {gave childrens names and DOB's) I believe that we should have qualified for this and would be grateful if you could refund any monies due.

For your reference our NI numbers are as below:

Mr ************* AB CD EF GH 1
Mrs ************ AB CD EF GH 1

    Yours faithfully,

    Hope this helps
  • Doh!! Phoned the tax office and the lady checked for me. Said I had already had it.

Phoned up today - we phoned our local tax office and were told to phone 0845 366 7830 to find out if we had received it and then phoned 0845 300 3900 to get the forms sent out .
They said we haven't received any for the year 2001 - 2002 but said it would have been included in our tax codes for the years after that. Also he said we couldn't claim for 2000-2001 cos it hadn't been introduced then I think?

Does anyone know how much we should receive for that year?
