Car Boot Threads - OS or Ebay?

Hi all

There have been a few questions about where these are most suited to as they can suit both the OS and eBay boards. What I thought might be useful is if we have a poll on it to see what the majority think and then take that into account.

So, here goes at (I think) my first attempt at a poll... :)

Andrea, I'm not sure how to vote as for me it depends whether the car boot/ jumble sale thread is for selling or buying. If it is selling then it seems logical to put it on the ebay board with all other selling format questions, if buying then I'm not so sure where to put it.

I have voted for the ebay board purely because I think it a better venue than the OS board where it doesn't seem to fit at all, but I think it is a bit of a difficult one.

Ebay for me......the board is called Ebay (and other auctions) board so it isn't just for threads on eBay! :)

How about a car boot baord???

It doesn't fit into auctions, and I wouldn't say car boots are OS
  • Do you think, then, it's perhaps worth differentiating between car boot threads about selling and the ones about buying? So perhaps obviously selling ones are moved to eBay and buying ones left here?

    Any thoughts welcome :)

Yes, Andrea, that makes perfect sense to me. :D

Can I also add that this arose as to confusion on buying 2nd hand items from *any* 2nd hand venue (including Jumble Sales, Charity Shops etc.) ??

WIRM - I take your point (on both threads) but may I just add, Boot Fairs are not "Auctions" and certainly my posts have not been about "selling" or the business angle of car boots

Would it be better having a carboot thread for whatever?

I've just noticed that one's appeared in the Scotland thread (because of a question about carboots in Edinburgh I think).

If the same topics appear in Wales, England, and Northern Ireland, wouldn't that at least justify a forum or sub forum of it's own?

Car boots are part of my OS lifestyle. For me its about being able to source things for the house very cheaply and its a form of recycling. I do have a clear out every couple of years to sell on a car boot - but I go to car boots most weeks in the year to buy bits 'n pieces e.g.

    kitchen equipment
    veggies and flowers
    books (main recipe and wildlife)
    lampshades / cushions
bits and bobs to decorate the house

It's just like going to charity shops for me ... or getting a good buy in any retail shop.

Ebay is different and I am less likely to rummage on there. I can see why some people see car booting as similar though if they are selling on a regular basis. It depends on how you view it. Car boots are just another place that I shop :D to make the money stretch further. They took over from jumble sales really.
Enjoying an MSE OS life :D

Andrea, since the fastest moving thread on the ebay board isn't actually an auction thread, but about selling on Amazon how about a slight name change for the board?

I can't think of something snappy, but how about something like 'ebay (and other selling venues) board? That would encompass the existing Amazon thread, plus all car boot selling threads and jumble sales etc.

Some of the questions from newer members on the ebay board tend to be about where to sell, and whether ebay has any advantage over car boots, or vice versa, so we are already talking about them all over there anyway.
