Default Due to have a baby 6 April onwards? Don't miss out on £190

What's the deal?

If you're pregnant, the baby's due date is on or after 6 April 2009 and you're at least 25 weeks pregnant you're entitled to a £190 one-off, tax free payment from the government. The grant isn't means-tested and comes in addition to any benefits or tax credits you get, including the Sure Start Maternity Grant, so if you're eligible make sure you apply.

The Health in Pregnancy Grant (HipG) is aimed at doing exactly what it says on the tin, keeping you fit and healthy in the last trimester of your pregnancy.

Who's eligible?

You can get the grant if all of the following apply:
  • you are 25 weeks pregnant or more
  • your expected date of delivery is on or after 6 April 2009
  • you have been given health advice from a midwife or doctor
How do you apply?

To get it you need to ask your midwife or doctor for the Health in Pregnancy Grant form, or phone the HipG Helpline on 0292 050 1178.

The forms are already available now so even if you're not 25 weeks pregnant yet ask for one now so you've plenty of time to fill it in. You can also sign up for a free text or email reminder on the Directgov website.

The mum-to-be must be the one who fills the form in. You'll need your bank account details and National Insurance number to hand.

Then ask your midwife to sign the form. The form needs to have been received within 31 days of them signing the form so don't ask them to sign it until you're ready to send it.

You should be given a reply-paid envelope with the form. If not, then post it to:

HM Revenue & Customs Health in Pregnancy Grant
Comben House
Farriers Way
Liverpool
L75 1AX

How will you get the money?

The £190 will go straight into your (the mum-to-be's) bank or building society account. If you apply before 1 April, the payment will not come until after this date.

Note: Thanks to all MoneySavers who've posted about the grant. This post has been started to provide detailed, researched explanation.

Default Missing out by 6 days!!

Hi,
My second child is due on the 30th March, if I go over my expected due date and don't deliver until on or after 6th April can I apply for this grant or do you have to apply in the last trimester!!
£190 would come in really handy!

I think you have to be due after the date so going overdue doesn't count... There has to be a cut off somewhere...

Wink No system in Place?

I have been advised that there is no system in place to send the form out to individuals. They suggest that we obtain from from midwives or GPs only. It's a shame. For my Daughter in law and son's baby shower, I am trying to put together a package of application forms, change of circumstances forms and discount Vouchers as a shower gift! Having a baby can be very distracting! So I thought I would give a gift that would help them boost their low income by saving them some time and money.

why dont you go to your health centre and just ask them if they can get you the form. although many dont even seem to know about it yet!

I was advised that if your baby is born after the 6th April you are still entitled to ask for this grant you must claim it within three months of birth though.

Mine has been filled in and sent off but after a short discussion with the people running the scheme i am a little disappointed there is going to be a large backlog of applications, the computer system was not in place, no one is opening mail and making a note of who has sent them in and its going to take them possibily till May to get themselves up and running so although the money will arrive eventually don't expect it to be in your bank account on the 1st April.

Thumbs down HipG

The government has these great plans, but doesn't think things out 1st. It would save a lot of hassle & time for all concerned if the government had sent us midwives the forms we are supposed to issue before informing the public!! We are being made to look foolish.

Sektslurper, i don't think anyone thinks midwives are foolish, it just seems that as you say the gov't has this great plan and announces it to everyone without putting the system in place.

Good luck to all, at least only having to wait still means you will get it!

I saw my midwife yesterday and although I’m not quite 25 weeks pregnant she gave me the form and post dated it for me (as I won’t be seeing her for another 4 weeks). She said to get the application in asap but not to expect payment until April at the earliest.

You could be super clever and get forms for yourselves (Not that u should have to!)
Your midwife or doctor will give you a Health in Pregnancy Grant claim form. This will usually be at your next ante-natal appointment after your 25th week of pregnancy. They will need to complete their parts of the form and sign and date their part of the claim form before giving it to you. If your midwife or doctor does not have a claim form please call the Health in Pregnancy Grant Helpline on Tel 0845 366 7885.
You can also get the claim form in large print by calling the Health in Pregnancy Grant Helpline on Tel 0845 366 7885.
Crown servants who work overseas
  • For HM Armed Forces - you can get the claim form from your HM Forces medical centre, or contact your HM forces Administration Officer for further information. If you need any further help you can call the Health in Pregnancy Grant Helpline on Tel + 44 292 050 1178
  • For civil servants - you can get further information on how to claim by calling the Health in Pregnancy Grant Helpline on Tel + 44 292 050 1178.

Original Thread about this is HERE - Martin why didn't you add ur bit to this thread? I'll let u off seeing as we all love you

My daughter just submitted this form yesterday. She asked for the forms weeks ago and the doctors, surgery staff, health visitors, mid-wives etc., knew nothing about it. My daughter had to explain it to the practice manager who in turn rang necessary depts and advised all staff. Isn't it just as well that she's a MS fanatic!!!
