Tiny / Time Computer Bargains? (merged)

Computer Buyer challenged Tiny.com to build a P.C for £299inc Vat. It ended up being a best buy recommendation and is now available on the Tiny website. The only thing is I don't think they want everyone to know about it as it is not advertised amongst the other desktops. You have to type in Tiny Economy into the search section and it will come up.
I haven't seen anything as good as this, with these specs, for office computing. The Celeron is the latest design so make sure you compare like for like, don't just look at the clock speed. It also comes with a wireless connection as standard, 512mb memory, cdrw/dvd, 80gb harddrive, and a 17"Monitor. The only things it doesn't have are a floppy drive (cheap to buy), and speakers (which would be rubbish anyway). The onboard graphics card is also a little light but fine for office applications. A graphics card can always be added if the need arises for around £30-£50.

Lol, I like this bit
Modem - Dedicated high speed Supanet optimised 56K modem*
It means unless you find a work around you can only connect to Supanet as the modem is configured to only work with that ISP.
I would actually wait for the Dell deals rather than buy this systemWelcome, rogerramjet.

Unfortunately there are two problems with this machine:
1. It's built by Tiny
2. It's supported by TinyYou don't get medals for sitting in the trenches.0 -

Good point about the Supanet modem. I use Broadband so would go through the wireless connection or the LAN connection. But if you use a modem you could buy one very cheaply and swap it for the one they provide, or put one in from an old system if you have it. Whatever works. Still a good price and comparable with Dell, from what I've seen on their site. Especially when they add their 3 year warranty on, pushing the price up by quite a lot.0

As for the modem being locked, it's very easy to unlock - just change the modem driver to a generic one. In any case, you can buy a 56k modem for around a fiver nowadays.
Or use this as an excuse to get broadband instead. Broadband now accounts for over half of net connections in the UK.

I am no supporter of Tiny or Time computers and usually would walk away from their systems. But Computer Buyer have a customer charter that they tack onto systems built by manufacturers for P.C tests in their magazines. It basically states that the computer should be supplied as reviewed for 6 weeks after the test and that the company deal promptly and fairly with complaints. They also check out their sales, production, and support departments prior to the tests. If the company does not adhere to the Fair Play charter set out in Computer Buyer then they name and shame them, withdraw awards and ban them from future tests.
It is a big deal for manufacturers to be in the tests as they are a shop window for their products.0 -

I'm guessing like most Computer magazines, Tiny and or their sister company Time spend a huge amount of money every month adverting in Computer Buyer?0 -

That probably just means it comes with Supanet preinstalled as the ISP, as I don't think you can actually program a modem to only work with 1 ISP... I've never heard of anything like that anyway. No reliance should be placed on the above.0
