Tip to people with virgin broadband get the virgin mobile contract at £10 a month (you have to use your own phone) and you get 300texts and 300 mins that rollover to the next month. It can also be canceled for the next month so your not stuck in the contract for ages. I've got a pay as you go samsung e250 (£50) and that it's a brilliant deal i think.

Default 3 Mobiles

If you can't get a contact mobile then the new Fresh rate from Three lets you buy a stretch top up for £15.00 which gives you 300 anytime minutes and 300 3 to 3 calls. Every bit as good as a contract and no credit check.

Unlike a contact, you don't have to pay the £15.00 every month only the months you are going to make a lot of calls.

The calls, if you don't want to buy extra minutes, are a flat 12p per minute to Landlines or Mobiles with free voicemail. I have moved to this and I am saving a fortune compared with my contract.

Default Beat £5 a month?

With T Mobile, I said I didn't really want a new phone - perfectly happy with what I had. With their Flex T rates they gave me an annual (12 month) price of £48 for the last couple of years - in 2006 they increased it a massive 25% to £60! And this was done in the shop, too.

My daughter who spends thousands a year it seems now hands over her old phone to me at the end of her year - so I get a great phone and a superb price.

Here's my dilema. I rarely use my phone to make calls, I basically let people call me but of course from time to time I need to make the odd call or send the odd txt. However PAYG rates are pretty high for Virgin. Is there a way of getting low cost calls or texts? Most of the PAYG offers are essentially cheaper contracts in that you must spend £10/month to get the bonus(es).

My only thought is to get something with a large cashback on the line rental. Now the bonus here is you get a free phone with it too. I'm pretty happy with my current phone so I'm not bothered about getting a new one. But it seems strange that you can get a free phone and free line-rental (via cashback) but you can't get some kind of very low cost contract that would actually make more money for them. No middle ground really.

ATM my only option seems to be cashback deals, however last time I made a real hash of things so I'm pretty cautious of doing it again. I keep hearing stories of companies that will make it hard for you to get cashback, even refusing legitimate claims. Are there any companies that have a good record with cashback deals?

Do not sign up for a cashback deal, I have just been stung by one going bust, even though I have complied with their terms and conditions I have not had any money back and lots of other money savers are in the same boat. See the Fusion Mobiles thread if you are tempted by a cashback deal. I did my homework but will still loose out.

Dead right - I've just registered for the same deal, but it's not on the web site. It's a phone only offer to existing Virgin customers. Give them a ring to say you're interested and ask them to phone you back.

I wouldn't say no to any cash back deals. My last two or three contracts have been cashback deals and I've always managed to get my cash without any problems, even when the operator switched part way through the year.

I think if you go with a bigger company like Phones4u or Carphone Warehouse then you'll be ok. I even managed to get more cashback than advertised last time by getting the shop to match another deal. I not only got £180 cash back over two cheque payments on a £35 a month contract but walked away with £60 cash in hand when I left the shop!

I'd definitely look at cashback deals again next year.

It's not just the receiving, it's the sharing of discounts that matter

My husband had a mobile cash back deal and after really forcing their arm with solicitors we got back 3 refunds back out of 5. After a recorded letter to them about the last two refunds it has been sent back by the post office as 'not at this address'. The offer was through Onecompare with a company called Mobile Affiliates. Beware!

Me too! My son has a rock band, ask me about them!

Default Vodafone Family - Calls between four numbers for a fiver

Anyone round here familiar with Vodafone Family?

One Vodafone user pays five pound a month, nominates three other Vodafone numbers, and all four can ring each other for no extra cash.

I ask as it would suit me and the missus down to the ground - save us a fortune compared to the Three tariffs we're currently on. But Vodafone seem to want to hide it away (you'll have to do a search on the website to find it).

If there's no catches, it would appear to be an absolute bargain, but I don't want to spend fifty quid on a new PAYG mobile if it's withdrawn next month, or somesuch.....

Hi palecitrus,

You've pretty much explained everything perfectly there about Vodafone Family. It's £5 per month for you plus 3 other numbers in a group, or £7 a month for you plus 5 numbers.
You can all call eachother up to 60 minutes per call, as many as you want, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week just for one person paying the subscription.
You can run one group yourself and be a member of up to 3 (so only 2 if you have your own group.) Numbers in your group can be either Contract or Pay As You Talk. There's more info about Vodafone Family here.

Hope this helps,
