Hi folks,
We've been experiencing some slowness on the Forum recently and one of the things we've been able to track it down to is the huge amount of thread subscriptions that we have to deal with, some of which date from the instalation of vBulletin, over 4 years ago.
In the old days, all users were automatically subscribed to every thread they posted in and it's this legacy that's causing us the problems.
So, to solutions:
1. From 10pm this Thursday, October 8th, we are taking the Forum down for an hour to delete a large number of old subscriptions - every thread that hasn't been updated for 6 months of more will have it subs removed.
2. We are going to switch everyone's automatic thread subscription setting to "Do not subscribe". If you want to change this,. you will need to go into your User CP - Edit Options - Messaging & Notification section and change the setting back.
3. We are considering setting a subscription limit to try and minimise the resource this consumes but we'll make that decision after we've done the deletion and see where that gets us.
We hope that this operation will give us back some resource without having any major negative affect on users.
if you have any questions, please let us know.

EEK! I subscribe to every comp I enter as a way of seeing clearly whether I've entered or not without opening the thread. I hope your measures work as I would hate to lose the ability to subscribe or have it limited, it makes life soooooo much easier. Thanks for all your hard work at the towers0

Hi Webby,
Many thanks for letting us know.
Could I request that the thread subscriptions remain for at least 6 months, as I post quite a lot of competitions on MSE, and like to know if there is a problem with one of my comps, so that I can try to rectify the fault.
Also, when doing your deletions, could this help to eliminate the forum search difficulties mentioned here as I'm still having this problem on a daily basis...

I think thats what Webby just said, anything not posted on in the last 6 months?
Just checked I've more than 4000 subscribed threads and my profile is set to not subscribe so a good measure to take.0 -

(not everyone will see this here...)
It's there for me, can anyone else not see it? it should be in every page at the top.

its at the top of every page for me !!
Am also a comper that uses the subscribe facility to track what I have and havent looked at / entered. Would be really lost if we get limited on subscriptions unless there is another way of giving us the little tick you get when you subscribe to a thread without subscribing? Ideally just a button to mark as read or something like that would be fab? Thanks to all posters and contributers :beer:0 -
Actually folks, I hadn't considered the Compers and their long term competition entries so to ensure that we give plenty of notice, we're moving the work back to this Thursday instead of tonight.

cool! does that mean you might look into finding us an alternative way of marking threads then with a little tick or something like it does when we subscribe to a thread at the moment? Thanks to all posters and contributers :beer:0
