Mayokay with 2009 fast approaching , it's time to make a small decision on the thread
do we- leave the thread unchanged and continue on as is
- OR make a fresh start and archive this thread as 2008 and then start a new thread ( with the guide at the front again of course) for 2009.
opinions welcomed . :beer:The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.0 -
Giving out moderator rights at this sub forum level would be fine frmo a technical perspective.....the normal Travel mods could moderate this new forum ongoing, and would just need a couple of people acquiring mod status while the setup is going on.
Best to hide the forum initially from the GBP until its all set up.
Do we have agreement on the threads........eg Flights and Car hire, Hotels, Grand Canyon, Places to eat, Shows, Things to do. Also one for bits and pieces such as free-wifi, timeshare opportunities, spas etcillegitimi non carborundum0 -
Copperfield at MGM.
Blimey - the guys doing four shows a day over Xmas. Soon he'll be able to afford to buy a 747 for the owner of the 747 he made disappear.illegitimi non carborundum0 -
MarchI totally ramble here...so ignore it if you get easily bored!
I dunno...the more I think about it the more I like it as one thread even though it has it's issues...just thinking that if, say, I've already sorted hotels...I may not look in the hotel thread and may miss something really appealing.
Also thinking about Open Vegas - even before it went so far downhill, people would post deals to the deals forum and few would see them as most people only went to the main forum...then if the same person posted the same deal in the main forum, loads and loads of people would see it and reply...I remember the $50 summer of Cirque promo was found by someone and originally put in the deals forum where the thread got like 3 replies...it was suggested that it was SUCH a deal that maybe it should also be on the main board...when it was posted on the main board a couple of days later, people went nuts - it WAS such a good deal, and most didn't see it in the deals section...it was generally the case that people looked at the main forum and only a few looked at the deals section (or the other areas)...then you have the issue of 'where did my post go?' and someone having to say 'it's now in the transport section'. Though the OP will probably have already reposted the question as they couldn't see it anywhere and thought they screwed up, so then the second one needs to be moved.
Also, just playing devils advocate with the list Froggit posted (and not playing devil's advocate with Froggit himself!)...are spas not things to do? Or timeshare presentations? Isn't the Grand Canyon a thing to do? OK, so it's a big thing to do, so it gets its own section...but what about Red Rock Canyon...it's not as big a canyon so it goes in the things to do section, or? Maybe a side trips section with a separate sub-section for the GC and an 'everything else'?
And a lot of posts combine info for a number of different things - car hire is often discussed as part of a GC question. If someone has a few different deals to report on - one for hotels, one for shows and one for restaurants, they would make 3 posts? Or post in one place and wait for the mods to shift it around/copy it accordingly?
I guess I think it might just get complicated...also thinking about Open Vegas in the old days, people would get a bit snappish (sometimes nasty) if newbies posted things in the wrong place...I don't think most here would go that route as everyone's quite friendly...but...still.
I don't know what the best option is...Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0 -
I can see where Ferf is coming from on this even though I voted for option 2. Would we perhaps miss out on our little chats (and arguements!!) with the special deals and little tips we have picked up.
How about one big thread as now with a couple of sub threads with
1. Trip Reports. (i love reading about others trips)
2. A tip thread. (Not money tips) With those little things we may have found that may be of use to others.
I throw my thoughts out for discussion, please shoot me down if you don't like them!!

Although I initially said sub-forums would be good, the more I read this the more I think we should just keep it the same - if it ain't broke, let's not try and fix it.
The thing I really like about this thread is being able just to skip through the last few pages to keep up-to-date with everything and this would be lost with sub-forums.
The only time it's a bit awkward is for new people when they discover the thread when there's already 100 pages of posts. But then we all had that problem at some stage and we've coped OK so far. The last thing we want is for people to stop contributing to this great resource.
So, my final answer - let's keep it to one big thread, starting fresh from 2009.0 -
Maythere's some cracking 'cancelled' rates here for delivery in May:
http://www.crowncurrencyexchange.com/content/cancelled-currency-contracts-dollars.asp
a rate of 1.6399 for one of them! worth a gamble buying a few I would say as no-one knows what the exchange rate will do... almost tempted to get some euro's as well...
(edit - you can also buy for 1.59 for delivery in March too!)
we're near enough all set for dollars now for our trip!!which is good as we were so worried about the exchange rate but reckon we've coped and our budget is no different to other years (tho $60 a night 'Paris' helped quite considerably!!!)
One question I do have, is that obviously all the rooms we have booked have had the deposits paid for by credit card, and further nights will have a cost 'secured' against them, however upon checking out can we pay cold hard cash?0 -
MayThe problem with option 2 is that you would need moderator rights from the forum controllers...
i'm all for option 2 just as we did this year, I think it works and maybe people can just help Tret's out by pointing out what can go in the first post, to make the 'trawling of the thread' a little less necessary
maybe we could also call it:
The Las Vegas Thread and MSE guide 2009 - READ THE FIRST POST!
then we could still use idea's suggested for the 'seperate threads' (and adopt something very similar to what is already being done) by having the first few posts of the thread as the different sections... So....
Post 1 in the Thread -> Index
Post 2 in the Thread -> Vegas
Post 3 in the Thread -> Grand Canyon
Post 4 in the Thread -> Car Hire
Post 5 in the Thread -> Trip reports
Post 6 (etc etc)
Then "Post 1" could have a short description and have 'shortcuts' to the other relevant posts.
If it's deemed something is missing further down the line, a post is just inserted at the 'end' of the thread and the Index points to that post...agree with me! you know you love that idea!
