Yes it was reported earlier in this topic. They announced in November I think it was that they are stopping flights to Chicago from March and Vegas from April/around Easter from Manchester. A great loss.

Golden Nugget deal that might be a good one to consider for downtown.

Las Vegas is known for great deals, such as 99-cent shrimp cocktails and $7.77 steaks. We just found an equally good deal at Downtown Las Vegas' only AAA 4-Diamond hotel. The Golden Nugget has just slashed its rates on dozens of dates -- including a weekend -- to $39-$49 per night:
    • $39 ... Dec. 17-18, 21-25, 28-29; Jan. 4-6, 11-15, 25-29
    • $49 ... Dec. 19-20; Feb. 3-5, 15-19, 22-26
    These extras are also included:
    • Dec. 17-24 and Jan. 2-6: $40 food and beverage credit (per stay, 2-night minimum)
    • Jan. 7 - March 1: Golden Values coupon book (including FREE drinks, 2-for-1 buffets, $10 gaming credit & more)
Travelzoo Tip: Many Friday and Saturday nights are only $59-$89.

    Some info here:

    http://www.lvol.com/events/newyear.html

Specifically 'big acts' (which used here is a relative term)

    http://www.lasvegassun.com/blogs/culture/2008/dec/03/new-years-eve-las-vegas---guide-glitterati/

    And more here

If you want to go to any of the big events I think you will need to book in advance (not sure how quickly these things sell out).

We went several years ago...it's not really our scene (we don't particularly like massive crowds) but we enjoyed it...wouldn't do it again for NYE, but that's us - loads of people love it. Most hotels on the strip will only allow in guests of that hotel for a period before and after the fireworks so as to control the crowds...so you may want to stay close to home base or at least be prepared to not be able to get into the nearest casino for awhile...the strip is closed to traffic from early evening and the entire length is rammed with people for the fireworks - it's a sight to behold...downtown is said to have a pretty fun party atmosphere and a bit more intimate than the strip - relatively speaking...but downtown is not everyone's cup of tea.

We have been twice on NYE and quite honest would not go again. It is manic with drunks all over the place. If you don't have a seat somewhere by 7pm forget it. If you are driving leave the car where it is, all casinos will only let quests park in their garages, some of the centre strip casinos will not even let you in after 12 if you don't have a room key. There are loads of VIP parties you can buy yourself into but you will be paying through the nose
BTW I think you will find that big acts are always playing the strip, in fact, I would think that most of them will be having the night off
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

Virgin has a rewards flight sale on - some dates as low as 25,000 miles to Vegas (though taxes are about £200 - and looking at Miles + Money fares the same dates in Feb were £299 using only 2000 miles...so doesn't seem that great a deal at least for the dates I looked...us 23,000 miles or pay an extra £99 we'd always go with the £99 I think and save the miles).

It's so wrong that I'm going to be made redundant on 30th Jan and am actually looking at flights to Vegas on 1st Feb....especially when you consider that we're going in April already. :)
