  • To AdrianC. Just think that if Woldlink are so much cheaper than the others that cover my area doesn't seem right that my existing supplier can stop me switching to them?

If there were other choices similarly priced, or if Flogas themselves are willing to offer a similar price then it wouldn't be an issue.

Your existing supplier aren't. Wold are.

It isn't another supplier, it is the same supplier. The contract that you sign is with Flogas not Woldlink.

I would take an educated guess that Woldlink have negotiated a price based on new business to Flogas of x 1000s or 100000s of litres. You moving from Flogas pricing to Woldlink pricing would not meet the Woldlink agreement.

I agree that it may be frustrating but given that you are in contract and the terms of the contract have been adhered to, you have very little choice. You can approach other suppliers and see if they will give you a better price and ask flogas for a cost to terminate the contract but that would be about the only option you have.

Latest prices, for December 2015 (apologies for the erratic service lately)

A little bit more of a bounce - let's just hope it's transient!

  • Lima gas have been taken over by J Gas limited.

Seems to be business as usual and the main guys are still employed there and website still operational.

    Current LPG price is 28PPL

Guess the current and sustained low fuel prices have put pressure on smaller company profit levels.

I've just ordered 900 litres from HBS in Hampshire at 30ppl + VAT. The very nice lady warned me that there will be a price increase in the New Year.

    IMPORTANT NOTE Re: Graphs

It has kindly been pointed out to me that some of the more recent graphs posted were showing the Extra Gas self own price rather than the company owned tank price, which is more representative.

All graphs for this year have now been updated to show the correct price.

We've just moved into a house with an LPG tank. Previously supplied by Calor and there's a contract here for me to sign at 42ppl with 17.23p per day standing charge.

The contract says that the tank remains the property of Calor. So can I even change supplier or am I locked to Calor?

    Welcome to the forum.

Yes, the tank is currently owned by Calor (few LPG users own their own tanks ...though ownership is not a problem, according to tank-owners! But that's another discussion).

Tank switching is easy - and done by outgoing and incoming suppliers - within 28 days (so long as new supplier buys the tank off the outgoing supplier, but they don't have to. There's a formula for the price. The incoming supplier might want to install their own tank, in which case the outgoing supplier removes theirs, but this may take up to 42 days for the complete process before you have a supply). All you have to do is fill in the tank switch form you get from the new supplier.

I suggest you put your postcode into the box at http://www.uklpg.org which is the website of the UKLPG-suppliers trade association and ring each potential supplier. They HAVE to give a quote over the phone (subject to site inspection - many tanks and their sitings do NOT meet the current industry code of practice). A supplier does NOT have to offer to supply - but if they do they HAVE to quote first over the phone.

For each supplier you need the initial price, the maximum increase during the 2 year contract, the tank rental, and any inducements ("free gas", etc). The suggestion is to make a chart. And include the name of the person you spoke to! And ask them to send a copy of their contract form (so you can enjoy reading the small print!).

Then check out other suppliers who are not UKLPG members (e.g. Extra Fuel) and any farmers' co-ops (e.g. Woldlink, Mole Valley,..).

And then play one off against the other. But also be aware that some firms are better than others regards honest dealing, reliability, etc. Many of us recommend going for an independent as you'll then have the same human to talk to (rather than a call centre) ..and also because competition helps to keep the near-monopolists in check (independents have only about 11% of the domestic market: the rest is Calor, Flogas and - very much third - Avantigas)

And check out HateLPG's chart: very, very useful.....and it will instantly show you that Calor's offer of 42ppl is rather high!

PLEASE post your postcode (just the first part) or nearest town, etc plus all the offers you get ....and what you finally go for, to help other forum users (just as you are probably wading through endless posts right now!).

    Good luck!

PS - "have to" etc: there have been various formal inquiries and resulting regulations for the domestic LPG 'market' - but it's still opaque. In last 2 weeks I have heard of someone paying 67ppl - to Flogas - and someone paying 23.71ppl - to Flogas (via Woldlink). Same product. There'll be similarly divergent prices for Calor.

Thanks for this info - very helpful.

Reading the small print of the contract, it says if I move home and the new owner doesn't continue with Calor, I'm liable for the £276 "tank lifting fee".

So, as the new owner, if I don't stay with Calor, I'm guessing Calor will go after the people we bought this house from for the £276...
