Hello there, I know it's a long shot in the dark :-) but does anyone
have a will that is just gathering dust? My mum wants to use it for her
Zumba exercise.

That annoys me immensely, 'gathering dust'. Even if I had a spare wii it wouldn't be bloody dusty.
As for your Mother, point her in the direction of her local community center where most do free, or nominal fee Zumba classes.

i asked for some fancy dress for my kids for tinywiggle's birthday party (before going hunting in town this week)................

I got told by 1 person they had one that I could BORROW. but it was their child's favourite possession so I MUST give it back when I had finished with it.

Politely declined that one!!!

Why?

I think thats very generous offering to lend you something thats important to their child

We've just had one come over our list.

Wanted: Bimbo chair

:rotfl:

LOL!

Someone near me wants a saxophone. Have you seen how much they cost? If I had one I wasn't using, I wouldn't be giving it away. But I'm kinda hoping there's a rich person who will give them one!

I find them so entertaining, I actually find myself putting:
Freecycle + "long shot"
or
Freecycle + "gathering dust"
or
Freecycle + "long shot" + "gathering dust"
into Google, so I can go straight to them!

As much as I love the outrageous Wanted ads, some of the Offers can be unbelieveable too.

We've had people trying to get rid of their Shredding - I kid you not - "for packaging"!

Then there's the woman who regularly fobs us all off with her USED toiletries!! - and then asks for "polite emails only" - clearly she's had people tell her where to go before, lol!

There's an old chest/trunk that's been advertised several times. Not surprising as it: "has quite a bit of rust"

We've currently got one today offering "6 cups and saucers - white with gold edge"

So China then! - aww bless.

:)
Look at it this way... In a hundred years who's gonna care?

toddler + party ....... can you imagine what would happen if he spilt something?? (plus if it's the same woman i think it is "I get stuff free then sell it 2 days later) she'll probaby find a mark on it that was already there and charge me a small fortune to replace it.
loves how my "I've been censored" signature has been censored. LOL. Happy Christmas. :xmastree:

Hello Jenny,

Thank you for the article, here are a few comments:

First the link to the page - thats a Freecycle page - shouldn't it be no specific?
I.E.
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/reuse-groups

and the big names are Freecycle.org and Freegle.
is incorrect.
It should be "and the big names are Freecycle and Freegle. "
What about reporting your Freegle successes? can that discussion be made into recycling group successes? (Oh - you missed a capital F)
Find your town, nearby village or city borough on Freecycle and Freegle and sign up to those.
the links are incorrect.

They should be to freecycle.org and http://www.ilovefreegle.org/groups/ as these are the find a group pages.
(Freecycle lets people post 'wanted' ads, which can get annoying).
Both groups allow this - it is not annoying it is necessary. without wanted then a load of stuff would not be given away to fill those wanteds.
Yet never, ever, use your normal email address
Blooming good advice there - I wish people would not use their works email etc.
To ramp up your chances, also join bordering areas - especially if they're swanky
This is likely to get you rejected on many groups, the idea is to sign up to your local group, use that and when you have not found a home for your old stuff - sign up to another surrounding group.
Not join all of the groups that surround you. (the mods can tell you know).
Offering a freebie couldn't be easier. Just start an email with the title OFFERED in capitals letters. Then put the item name of the item and the first part of the postcode in brackets, eg, "OFFERED: Grand piano (SW16)".
Not all groups use post codes, do you know all post codes that surround you? I don't. Many groups insist on place names for the location instead.
Then just send the email to your Freecycle group's email address, eg, Enfield_Freecycle@yahoogroups.com
Is it wise to publish a groups email address like that? If thats a real group then its gonna get a shed load of spam and people trying to use it that are not members - please change it to something like "the groups email address"
ie, "TAKEN Grand piano SW16".
There is no need for a location in a TAKEN post for either, it is just the messagemakers that put it there. (the messagemakers are web pages that help you to post correctly).
Ask if it's worth it
Please change this to "Ask yourself if it's worth it".

You could also put in
You can always say "NO", if you arrive to collect something and it is not as described then you can simply say "no thank you - please give it to someone else", you do not have to take it.
This is for when you turn up to collect what is described as a VGC item and it turns out to be a pile of junk that the dog did a dump in (it does happen). :)

RE Freegle using Facebook, more and more members are joining up using this access now as they can do it via their mobile phones.

Hopefully in time to come the article will evolve to mentioning the British site before the US one.

Thanks for the article Jenny. :T :T :T

That's a pretty comprehensive guide. :)

Freecycle is not just merely a source of freebies. The spirit is that it's a recycling community, so you should give, as well as get.
Many groups require new posters to initially post an 'offer' before replying to other posts. And it is a community. Being polite and fair will help you when you are in need of some hard to find 'doodad'.

There can be some incredible finds...
Also, and more importantly to the mainstay of FC'ers, it's the best place to find and pass on the small or incidental things you'd be hard pushed to find elsewhere; the real recycling that builds a good FC community. e.g. Finding jam jars during the jam making season. Or fresh fruit from people who've fruit trees and wish to share excess produce. Or that token from Friday's newspaper you forgot to cut out before the paper was recycled.

Just for sheer randomness...

Offered: Bottom half and legs of adult mannequin

Annoyingly, because I really want to know now, no text included to explain what happened to the top half and arms!

Maybe these half missing mannequins are taking over the world :rotfl:
Male shop dummy on base, headless, and missing one hand.

Saw the above which reminded me of the previous offer that was posted on the thread :T

I saw one of our freecycle group the other day saying: wanted: 32 inch tv, has to be a flatscreen one as I don't want a fat back one, oh and I can't drive so you'll have to bring it over.

I seriously wondered if it was a joke
