Why would they set it so that you can't enter a gmail address? Although Gmail was withdrawn a few years back, anyone who had a gmail address back then kept them0

You can, and always could, enter a gmail address. The problem only arises if you change your googlemail address to gmail.
Everything works OK except googletalk and that stops you downloading apps.
To fix it you either go back to googlemail or do a factory reset.
I chose to do a factory reset and it took about10 mins to do nad then I just had to download the apps again which took another 15-20 mins.
Your phone automatically backs up to the SD card (unless you've disabled it). When you do a rest it reboots and asks you if you want to restore the settings, say yes and you then go through the setup process again need to enter your new gmail details and your facebook, twitter accounts etc.
It really doesn't take long. Then you just download any apps you had installed again.
Which option you go for depends on how important it is to you to have a gmail account rather than a googlemail one. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
Im getting quite jealous of you lot talking about the desire, but i just need to wait till end of may to get 10

For anyone having the "Google Talk Authentication Failed" error in relation to using an Apps domain:
In the end I got totally fed up with the lack of response from Google on this issue and phoned my carrier (Three UK). They reported a couple of others had come through the support channel with the same issue, and are currently issuing replacement handsets to those affected. I think he knew as well as I did this wouldn't solve the problem, but I'm not going to turn down the opportunity to get a new handset, and he can have this one back providing the new one is still unlocked and has the HTC Firmware rather than the Three firmware.
I also phoned HTC support in the USA (UK office is closed for the weekend) and explained the issue. Spoke to a very nice lady who was totally clueless and had no advice of use.
WORKAROUND:
In the end I reset my device for a 4th time, and added my GMail account as the primary account, then my Apps account as another.
1) Set up the device as normal, GMail first.
2) Turn off contact/email sync for this account but leave calendars enabled.
3) Add Apps as another Google account. Check Contacts/Email sync is ON.
4) In Google Apps Admin, change the maximum sharing permissions to "Can Edit Events/Sharing" (or similar)
5) Login to Apps Calendar, and share all your calendars with said permissions to your GMail account
6) Resync the device, and reboot (just for good measure)
7) Edit the device Calendar settings to show the ones you want again
This works for me. Google Talk logs in instantly, the market works, push emails arrive as they used to and so on. You can also add/see/set reminders for Calendar events as you always used to, just "via" your GMail account rather than direct with your Apps account.
It's kludgy, but it works.
One thing I did download and use (it's $4.99 but worth it imho) is Sprite Backup for Andorid. This saves just about every setting including contact photos, SMS, contact 'links', device settings, photos, music, and so forth onto the SD card. It makes factory resets much less arduous to recover from and goes above and beyond what the automated SD card backup keeps.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

Has an actual date for release on o2 been announced? I can only see 'May' on the o2 website. I really want one of these but unfortunately have to stick with o2 as I can only get a signal with them where I live. I was on a 18 month iphone tariff which has just run out and I'm now on the iphone simplicity tariff. Do I stand any chance of gettting a good deal if I sign up for another contract? Has anyone managed it with o2?! Thanks for any help/advice0

your problem is well documented on android forums for a while now as the same has been happening for uk users of the nexus 1. there are a few workarounds described on those threads on android forums. google has been aware of the problem for a few months now as far as i can see on those threadsbubblesmoney :hello:0 -
there seems to be well priced deals after cashback of £160 on 600xnet plus some texts, 1gb internet on 18m contract of £30/m and a little more than £21+ after cashback see link
I dont know anything about the reliability of beepy website though wrt delivery and cashback etc. also internet it says is 1gb and no other free booster eventhough tmobile deal.

The curious thing is though it only stopped working for me last Wednesday. It'd been working fine for 2 weeks prior to that.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j
