    Well that was painless!!

Just moved from BT (£25.99 pm) to MAAF (14.99pm) Only downside is a 4Gb per month cap but that shouldn't be a problem. ( I also get a wireless router for £25 plus £10 back for being referred by a friend who already has MAAF)

One unexpected bonus is that with BT I was getting 2.2Mbps I haven't got the MAAF router/modem yet so I'm still using the old BT voyager 105 and just changing the username/password to the MAAF one, but I'm now getting 7.6Mbps...which is nice!

One question however: When my Voyager 2091 router arrives I will want to have broadband on both the PC's in the house. Do I actually need to buy anything else so that the Dell computer I've recently bought can also get broadband? (I'm assured that it's ethernet enabled, has an ethernet card or something!)

    Thanks
    Steve
  • I am now getting 0.81 MB for my money. This is just not good enough.
  • Hi Hubballi,

I'd just like to let you know that I'm still keeping an eye on your speeds - please keep doing speed tests through the My Account facility.

Also - I've just PM'd you with some more troubleshooting, I'd be grateful if you could please help me out with more diagnostics.

I would like to make sure that you know that speeds up to 8Mb can fluctuate - which is why an hour prior to the 0.81 you were getting 2.6Mb. If you would be happier on a service where you are getting a consistent 2Mb, I can arrange that, however it would mean that would be your ceiling speed and you wouldn't be able to break that barrier.

    Kind regards,
    Samara

  • Hi Dr. Wu,

The good news is that the usage allowance is 5GB a month! You can check your usage at any time through "My Account" and we'll email you when you get close to your usage threshold. You can exceed the usage allowance in any given month and additional usage is charged at £2 per GB exceeded. Of course if you're always exceeding the 5GB usage threshold, you can switch to MAX plus (20GB) and there is not penalty for doing so.

When your Voyager 2091 depending on your set up, you may require additional equiptment. If your computers are already wireless enabled (most newer laptops are) then you won't need anything additional. If they're not wireless enabled, you can connected to the Voyager 2091 through the USB or Ethernet port. If you wish to connect to the 2091 wirelessly you can look at the wireless adapter options that are available to you. Here is a link to all the wireless adapters that we offer.

Welcome to Madasafish and please keep posting or PM me should you have any further questions.

    Kind regards

If the BT Wholesale speed tester is used, it states that BT would regard the speed ranges shown below as normal service:

    For 250kbps End Users speeds between 50 - 250kbps.
    For 500kbps End Users speeds between 100 - 500kbps.
    For 1000kbps End Users speeds between 200 - 1000kbps.
    For 2000kbps End Users speeds between 400 - 2000kbps.

Are figures like this available for ADSL Max regarding the lower limit?

  • Hi Espresso

The speeds for Max are between 400K and 8000Kbps - I preferred the old system better where the thresholds were a bit stricter. But if your speeds are fluctuating from 2.6Mb to 800Kbps we will troubleshoot, we expect for speeds to fluctuate some, however leaps like this could indicate a further problem on the line.

Thanks for the info. I have looked for this before but have not found the lower limit specified.

  • Hello espresso and thank you for the latest suggestion.

You could always add a cheap wireless access point to extend coverage to a particular area if necessary

Does such a point need to be wired in by an electrician? (any powered points require this nowadays in the UK)
A genuinely cheap access point for the garden would be good, but if there are installation costs, regardless of hardware, it wouldn't be cheap.

No need for an electrician but it would need to be connected to the mains for power and also to the router via an Ethernet cable. However if the wireless router is situated in a good position, it should be able to cover the house and the garden unless it is very large. i.e. if your phone socket is right at the front of the property and you want coverage of the garden, it would be better to situate the router at the back of the house to cover the garden by extending the phone wiring.
