If there is a landline in the house that I live (a saw bills coming, it's a shared house) and a want a new line would a have to pay the connection fee? 124.99 seems huge for me!
Unlikely if the line was just 'stopped' when the previous tenant left (i.e. not disconnected).

In any case, BT's £29.99 offer is avalable from the Customer Options Team (0800 800 880).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone on this thread! I was just about to phone BT back and grudgingly accept the £125 recon fee to a rented property I'm moving into on Friday but saw this first and have successfully got the special offer!

    The thieving bA*****ds !

I too called BT and was told £125.

Ahh, not to worry, Ill take your £30 offer that you cant offer me !

Ah yes sir, thats for cable only customers.!

Asked to speak to the supervisor and hey presto, he agreed that the operator was incorrect and would be re trained. I asked how Mrs Miggins who is £80 is meant to get this and he said that OFCOM would not permit them to tell customers that they had the option to pay £100 less

BT are a bunch of thieving gits, they really are.

i dont even think the £30 offer is that good, your having to commit to 18 months instead of 12 so more likely to end the contract early

 I am in the middle of moving from Talk Talk to BT for my landline so here is what has happend as a warning to others.
The date for BT to take over 14th Nov
Talk Talk disconnected my phone on the 29th Oct
    result "No Phone"
Each blaming the other but Talk Talk keep line rental live so I am still paying them for it and cannot make any calls.
This is the service where they do everything for you except what you want

You save £95, equivalent to around 8/9 months line rental, so it's definitely worth considering. If you went elsewhere to avoid a contract, you would have to pay the full installation fee up front, so there is a cash flow/interest implication as well.
  • This has been a nightmare ever since a i moved in 1 1/2 months ago now.

When I first moved in I only knew about two phone sockets in the flat (new build - 5th or 6th tenant), both with no dial tone.
I phoned BT to set it up and argued with them for hours about the connection charge as I knew that the last tenant who moved out under a month ago had a BT line installed, i thought I shouldnt be charged. I got conflicting stories from different people, one operator set everything up, no charge, he could see the line, said "ill just patch you through to the credit checking team" and he patched me through to empty space. I phoned back and finally someone set it up again and said to phone back on Monday and it will be set up - needless to say when I phoned back they had no record of call on the Saturday.
In the end I found out about the £30 deal and went through with that as everyone now seemed to think i needed a standard connection and not just a reconnection, I'd had enough arguing.

The next day I arrive back at my flat to find a BT master socket in my utility room corner.............. plugged phone in and .....dial tone...this line number is 01......
Well more phone calls ensued (I cant even remeber what happened now) and they ended up scheduling an engineer for the end of the week with a note saing "if no work needed, no charge applys". Well the engineer ohoned up on the Saturday and said, oh.... you have a phone line....whats the number when you dial into it........oh...thats your phone number...yup its registered to you.
I phone BT and tell them about this but they still repeat the "stanadard connection fee" garbage in several different forms, conflicting reasons as to why I should be charged this.

Present day and I just phoned up again to contest this connection charge (I would just pay the £30 but I'm probably not going to be here past 6 months, never mind 18). First operator argued and faltered then patched me though to the "homeowners department" which probably doesnt exist as the nice automated lady said da da da... this number does not exist. Second operator speaks to his manager and says
" the reason you are being charged the standard connection fee is because the previous tenant moved their phone line to their new property, rather than canceling it. If they had just canceled the phone phone line I would not be liable for a standard connection charge."

Is this true or complete crap?

This took so long and so many phone calls and different orders to set up that all I know is my line was set up on the 13th and the engineer was scheduled to come out on the 21st (the one who phoned and said my line had been connected since the 13th).

Does anyone know whether BT are stringing me along or whether I am actually liable for the standard connection charge?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.
  • With many companies including BT if you phone, each time you speak to a different person you will get a different answer, even if you ask the same question everytime you phone.

as fannyhill says this is too true you do get different answers when you speak to another person at Bt so i will explain when charges will apply.

The only time you will be charged to reconnect is ..
    1. ceased line (you may have a socket but external connection no longer exists in green cab or exchange) so full charges apply
2.Previous service was LLU talk talk. tiscali or bulldog and had been stopped.
    3. no line and new provide required

You regularly post here on matters to do with BT (in an authoritative manner, though have been known to make incorrect statements)

Are you posting in an official BT capacity? And will BT stand by things you say here?

If so, you need to be properly authorised by MSE.

If not, people ought to be aware!
