Webworks Internet - anyone else had problems?

And it doesn't help people by saying + VAT, as a lot of people do not know how to calculate VAT on to the asking price.
Also if you wish to contact webworks, it cost you 10p per minute, so here is their actual phone number 01325 364367, that is charged at local rate and it takes you to the same switch board.
Sorry for such a long post
Not sure I agree with that bit - their market is business not consumer, so quoting net + vat is perfectly normal - if a business can not add vat on to something, well they shouldn't be in business.
As to the local rate call - well they aren't the only company!!

That bits true. I work for a wholesaler and all prices are exclusive of VAT always. This is the norm.
Play.com is hosted by WEBWORKS so it would be odd if it is the same company? They wouldnt use any old outfit i wouldnt have thought. Having said that, its probably one rule for Play.com and one for the rest of us JOE PUBLIC0 -
ok...so what about keeping people's credit/ debit card information then lying to the customer by saying they don't have access to that sort of information and they can only get the last four digits from their "accounts department". Is lying to people alright? Also there are far more compaints about webworks then there are positives. So could this mean that any positives are made by webworks themselves, after all a web based business will know how to access forums such as this???0

Confused
Your post doesn't really make any sense - I was just pointing out that sending a bill with out the VAT showing is normal in most business to business transactions .... I have really no idea whether Webworks are any good - but what I would say is getting a business website for £117 is VERY cheap!!!

Having just re-read the post in question - I think we were basically being accused of being webwork employees .... interesting I never even mentioned them in my post!!

depending on how the domain has been registered, as long as it is a .co.uk or an .org.uk you may be able to get it back for £24.00.
go to http://www.nic.uk/ and type your web address into the site checker.
if it is in your name, but not your address, then great, you can follow this process.
then ring Nominet (the UK domain registrar), and request an identity verification - they will confirm its rightfully yours, and give you access to their control panel. this costs £10+vat.
then once logged in, request an IPS tag change, for £10+vat (nominet charge again). they use Fasthosts - i recommend 123-REG. Open an account with 123reg and then follow the process to transfer the domain name in.
bit faffy, but better than their fees.0 -
Just to clarify, WebWorks Internet (UK) Ltd (the company in question), and WebWorks Limited (the company that owns and runs Play.com) are two different entities.
In any case, here is my experience with WebWorks. I run an IT company in the North East of England, the same area as WebWorks Internet specialising in Web Design and computer sales. A close friend of mine came to me saying he had just had his hosting and "domain renewal notice" (even though his domain had another year left) and they where charging him £159 plus VAT. I told him to do nothing, and I would get in touch with them as I found this downright extortionate, and wouldn't allow him to pay it. For the same service, I charge £69 plus VAT. WebWorks use FastHosts, and their actual cost is £63 yearly, so you do the math on their margins.
In any-case, he told me he had paid £300 for his site, and he wanted a new site developing where he could advertise his cars for sale and that his existing site was inadequate. So I promptly created him his new e-Commerce site for the same fee they where charging for his basic 4 page site. Fortunately, I deal in the internet, so I knew with his name on the Whois data, even if its held by WebWorks, he owned the domain. I promptly contacted FastHosts and told them my client wishes to transfer his domain to myself, FastHosts agreed that the FREE transfer would take place after notifying WebWorks. Un-knowingly to me, after receiving this notification, WebWorks contacted my client informing him he must pay £100 for the transfer (he didn't have to, it was going to be free and there was nothing they could do about it) and that I had informed them to contact him (I had most definitely not!) So, he paid. Naturally I was fuming! Now this is dragging on, so I'll shorten it down, I demand a refund, they told me they'd call me back, they didn't, I called them back, they hung up. I rang them again, they blocked my number.
Long story short - do NOT deal with WebWorks, they are frankly criminals. This inspired me to write a advise section on my companies website. Google FireSpit IT and read my advise section for more information, or please give me a call for free advise, the number is on the site, and I'd be more than happy to take your call if it prevents you getting ripped off by these criminals making our industry look bad!
P.S. .co.uk domain transfers are always FREE! They cost them nothing! and I'd be happy to help you transfer yours away from them to a domain account YOU own, again, for free!0 -

Read amusingly these posts above.....
1) Those who think £100 for a website isn't cheap ....are potty.
2) Those who think you should include Vat in the price....are potty when B2B doesn't work like that (one claims the vat back)
3) Domain change registration costs are free....yes if you do it yourself but why should a company do it for you for nothing?
4) Unquestionably this company are undertaking some questionable practices.....but I suspect that they just got lazy with their customer service..I don't think they started out as "criminals"...(which is a bit excessive)......in an attempt to offer a competitive business service they didn't price in customer service (for fear of pricing themselves out of their market)......think of any business..... take supermarkets for example.....you do not get M&S or John Lewis customer service from Aldi........but you don't pay their prices either..... somehow Aldi manage to ensure that floor staff can direct you to the peas......Network Internet....don't ..........that's all...... And frankly after the Internet has been around for 15 years +....companies that do not have websites yet are frankly a throwback and there needs to be companies that offer hand holding to those who have finally caught up to the present!0
