Well it's been downright awful here in Somerset for the last couple of days with non-stop rain! Just wondering how committed you lovely peeps are... have you been put off by gardening when it's raining? Are you a shrinking violet or a hardy perennial? Just a light hearted thread ☔🌧️

Can anyone recommend reasonably priced potting compost this year?
I grow some cuttings , perennials etc for charitable causes, so get through quite a few bags of compost each season. It gets dearer and dearer and poorer and poorer quality and harder to come by. ( no garden centres near me) .This year I bought multipurpose peat free from Aldi and yesterday some Levingtons. Both are pretty…

A catalogue of trial, error and advice
Hi All, I recently purchased a property with a very neglected garden that will require a full renovation. I'm looking for some advice on if my plans are sensible. I'm going to be starting with essentially an empty rectangle (no patio/garden room etc) so please feel free to make any and all suggested layout changes.…

Lawn border edging MSE style?
Looking at the different types of edging for the front garden (to separate the lawn and some gravel) and was surprised by the price of these things. Existing edging is one of these wood reels which we dislike as they seem to attract woodlice insects! Which made me think of this forum, what edging have you done for your…

Help with garden design
I'm hoping to lean on the community to get some help and ideas on how to design my garden. The property is an end of terrace with side access and the garden is east facing. It has 3 levels and is very steep at the end. We lose sun at the swings by 5pm at peak summer and there's usually sun at the highest level until 6. The…

Waterproof marker pens that actually work in the garden
Hello all - am having to make my annual Xmas wishlist, and one item that I'd like to recommend to the elves is a waterproof marker pen that works in real garden situations - i.e., will write on something that may be a little damp and muddy, such as plant labels or plastic sacks that I'm storing a compost mix or similar in.…

Upcycling is Money-saving: Repurposing unwanted stuff for the garden
Have been waiting for a dry and sunny week-long weather in my area so that I can begin to put up my 'old sofa seat' as an upcycled-trellis for my Clematis. The current and broken trellis of my Clematis was destroyed by strong winds in early Winter (that was made from quality wood, the old frames of an old shed, which…

Tree issues with new build

While it was a greenfield site the house that our back garden now looks onto had grown a massive big monkey tree in there garden. it's massive. It blocks light into our garden and lounge but more importantly we are really worried should it…

Can my bay trees be saved?
Hi all. I’m struggling to help my bay trees. They were planted 4 years ago in raised beds with new soil. For the first 2 years they were fine. After the last winter they didn’t look great and i thought they had vine weevils so treated them but it didn’t help. Now the 2 in the right hand side bed have died and the 2 in the…

Tree planting
My local council has had numerous five foot. trees planted over the past few years and many have died. I believe that they were poorly planted. They are now having a meeting about the way forward. How do we get a tender to inspect the trees and how do we get a tender to plant more trees?

Weathering blending slabs
So I replaced one slab with a new one as it was damaged the new one stood out. Managed to take one from the back garden instead which seems better when it’s wet it’s an exact match but when dry the weathering is slightly suggest but still a good match. Someone told me a new one would take 20 plus years to weather to same…

Keeping hens and ducks chat.
As a hen and cockerel keeper myself I thought it would be interesting to ask what you name your hens and cockerels and also ask how many eggs you get per day. I know the egg laying changes when they moult but just thought it would be interesting to see how many you get. I have hens that are named Bluebell, Muesli,…
