Gifts from Surplus Income
I’m currently assessing my father’s surplus income in order to establish how much he can give away as gifts made from surplus income which will be exempt from inheritance tax. I’m unsure whether the small gifts of up to £250 per individual and £3000 to a different individual should be treated as coming from his income or…

Do I have to declare my Private Medical on my Self Assessment?
My employer gives me private medical to the sum of around £730, making my tax code S1184L instead of the usual S1257L (I am from Scotland) Do I need to declare this on my self assessment? I asked HMRC this last year when I did my self assessment and they told me I don't, but I got concerned this time around and called…

You may be paying tax on savings interest when you should not be.
Just got off the phone from HMRC again about why I have been paying tax on a second pension when I am under the tax limit £12570 for 2 pensions so should get the full starter rate limit £5000 plus the £1000 on savings interest. Last tax year I had tax taken out because I was over the basic £1000 savings interest limit…

Naive thinking HMRC will reply in writing?
Hello, I posted a letter to HMRC (BX9 1AS) over a week ago and paid for tracking. It's still saying it hasn't been delivered. If it ever does get delivered am I naive thinking they will reply in writing because I've written to them or is that not the case?

Empty House Premium for new Owner
My daughter completed on an empty flat in Oct 25 and decided not to move in until she had decorated. She completed the Council Tax form to say she had taken over the property and ticked the Empty Property box. It now transpires that there is a difference between Empty and not moved in properly! She was then sent a bill…

Where do previous payments on account appear on current year tax return?
I'm keying in figures into my 25/26 personal tax return having made 1 payment on account for that tax year already and another due in July. In the main self assessment (right up to the calculation and "submit" button), I don't see either of those 2 payments on account featuring anywhere, and instead the balancing payment…

[LTD HMRC] Closure of the service to file your company accounts and tax return?
Hi All, HMRC is dropping the online filling service. This is their justification which I don't buy as how their own online form cannot meet modern digital standards and they push everyone to use proprietary software? Unless there is something free/open source I could use. They introduced this service like 14 years ago not…

Amending Tax return/ Marriage Allowance
I too have been asked to complete a tax return for 24/25. I have completed it and sent it yesterday. I paid the amount asked for straightaway. Guess what today, I have found another £35 interest which was paid on an old account, so I need to amend the return. Right now, because it is less than 72 hours since completion it…

Are UK take-home calculators too complicated?
I’m trying to understand whether people prefer simple tax calculators or detailed ones. I built a stripped-back prototype to explore this and would appreciate critique. Thanks in advance.

HMRC - Lack of communication and income tax due.
I have tried to register with HMRC but all efforts have so far failed. I've tried writing to them but no response. I've tried ringing, but they simply keep me hanging on the line after numerous automated questions to put me through to the correct department, then the endless wait to speak to a human being, and the wracking…

Tax on a prepaid card for charity
I work as a volunteer for a small registered charity. If our charity was to put money onto my personal prepaid card (Revolut) for purchasing goods for charity purposes, would HMRC regard that as taxable income? I would have receipts to prove all purchases. In a typical year this could be as much as £20 - 30K in purchases.

Ending Married Couples Allowance Transfer
So, my wife applied to transfer her allowance to me a couple of years ago when we did our tax returns and the transfer was effectively backdated to the tax return year. I assumed cancelling the transfer could also be done in the same manner - so cancel while doing our 25/26 returns to apply for the 25/26 tax yea rand…

Marriage Allowance - cancelling and backdating
Thoughts please, from anyone in the know, on a curious question that has just arisen this weekend when investigating Marriage Allowance rules. A few statements of fact first: * When a married couple set up Marriage Allowance - transferring 10% of one persons tax allowance to the other, it stays in place for ever unless…
