Hi, I have just opened a Government Gateway account and registered for self assessment.
When I got to the end of the process and was told that I already had a Government Gateway account and was to use the original one.
I completed the forms for Self Assessment on the duplicate account and was expecting the 2 accounts to be merged - but I can't see where to find my self assessment info... will they be merged or  do I have to fill in the forms  again on my  original Government Gateway account?

No I haven't yet that was my plan for first thing on Monday.
I've entered the UTR on both accounts and I think that it needs to be removed from one of them.

Is it better to have 2 government gateway accounts?
1 for PAYE and a different one for self assessment?

I don't think that is (meant to be) possible as both should see your National Insurance number as part of the underlying data.

If you don't have a National Insurance number for some reason I don't think online government services are usually available to you.
  • Yes I have a NI number and can access the original Government Gateway account to see PAYE earnings from previous years but I can't access self assessment from that log in... It's a muddle and all very last minute  :#
Hopefully someone from HMRC can help sort it tomorrow

    Original account with PAYE

You are not signed in to the right account

    Access your Self Assessment

You used a different account when you first signed-up to view or send your tax returns online.

    Other account

You need to sign back in to Government Gateway using different details

    Access your Self Assessment

You will be asked to sign in again with the user ID and password for the account you use for Self Assessment.

  • I have a similar problem. I am trying to submit my tax return. I have a government gateway login and also a login I used before the introduction of the government gateway.  When I login to the government gateway it says that I must use the older  login that I  used before, but when I try to use that it says I must use my government
gateway login. I'm in a loop.  Would it be solved by deleting all mygov.uk and government gateway logins and starting over again?

Are any of the options on this page any use?
Sign in to HMRC - Sign in to HMRC online services - GOV.UK
  • The first one to government gateway is the one I use.  The second gives me the message that I can't use it for tax submission.  And the third one enables you to generate even more gateway logins which makes the problem worse
