    Hi all,
We made our first mortgage overpayment this week, just £100 but at least something. It's very satisfying to see the bacs transfer go through, sad but true!
I plan to make the odd pverpayment when I can - when we have already put our normal savings through, anything left can go to mortgage sort of thing. Like if I make any savings on shopping for example, I'll try and get rounded up to £50 and then put it through.

Timbear well done on becoming debt free this month!

Just transferred £70 to the ISA. Sig updated to reflect new total.
ISA savings: £25,139 Other Savings: £1750 (tied up in bond)
  • can I join in please?

I paid off my mortgage around a year ago (mfi3 challenge) and managed to save up £12k but it got spent on a new boiler, new bathroom (with walls knocked down etc so a big job) and an overseas holiday for the 4 of us so it all went.

I am currently at zero but hopeful I can save up quickly and have budgetted accordingly for this. Had an expensive time at xmas mainly due to family bereavement and having funeral expenses to pay. Have just adopted a rescue dog so thats meant a few extra expenses but I dont have any debts so I mean to save up seriously this year.

My goal is £10k which would be our safety net and then another £10k in case we need a new car so £20k in total. Good luck everyone and heres hoping 2011 is a year that we save up!

Barros, we make our lunches the night before (be it leftovers from tea or sandwiches/wraps etc). That way we don't have to get up so early in the morning!

Congratulations on your savings so far! Were you saving whilst at uni or is that just since you graduated?

ThanksTimBear, good plan! I have left overs from last night in the freezer for lunch tomorrow in fact ;o)

No, I stayed away from home at uni, so this is since graduating. Although for the first 2 years ish I didn't save anything - the novelty of having spare cash didn't wear off for a while! so mostly, for the past 3 years.

I sold some holiday vouchers to my Mum so I have put £250 into my savings account. I have also set-up a DD into my savings for £35 a week so hopefully it will start growing nice and quickly. I cant wait until I have enough to pay of one of my many debts but at least it will be one down.

  • Savings took a massive hit this month. Mum needed to pay off some bills and to give my sister money to buy a house. That set me back £5,500. I've been promised that it'd be paid back soonest and I'd get a little reward for it.
Plus, I spent over £900 on gold (as an investment).
So, at the moment, I have only £24 to my name. Looks like it is going to be a difficult target to hit this year.

Terrible way to start the year; Still hoping I reach £10,000 this year!

    Update for year ending 2010:

    Savings Challenge/ Deposit for House - £14,035.87/ £17,500 (end 2010) (2009 - £14,713.73 (98%))
Went down towards the end of the year as I had to use some of the money to pay some things off.
    Premium Bonds: £3,000 by end 2010 (100%) (2009 Target £1,500 - 106% achieved)
Stayed at a standstill at 92% for most of the year but have just added £250 to it recently so have achieved my goal in this area.
    Shares: £669.97 (Bought £1,485.43)
Not totally updated this one but there is a big difference as I have recently sold some shares and made a nice hefty profit on them.
    SIPP: £1,592.11
This is the only area I have really paid quite a bit of money into and have continued to put money into it every month despite all the areas staying still.
    S&S ISA: £3,572.42 (Bought £????)
Not done much in this area over the last 12 months although it is looking healthy.
Company Shares: £4,851.82 (Bought 6,970 shares)
These are shares that I have bought in the company I work for and am waiting for the price to rise quite a bit before I sell them, I am also waiting for dividends to start being paid again.

Total up to here is £24,722.19.

    Other:
    Sharesave: £16,163.44
This is a scheme I started with work middle of last year and am putting the full £250 p/m into it. Am hoping to come out with 23,220 shares so the total above is what it would be worth at the moment. This matures in 2013.
    Sharesave: £2,2237.27
These are shares that come out my wages each month and my work contribute a sum to it to. I have about 3,214 shares in this scheme.
    Other: £3,088
This is tied up until about 2017 so no access soon.

So including everything in my total would be £46,210.90 but it is very optimistic.

Sorry this is very long but I haven't posted an update for a while and I thought I better get 2010 out of the way.
