I have no idea how to post it on here (help please?) so I have uploaded it onto yousendit and you can follow the link below to get it.

It's nothing spectacular, a simple excel spreadsheet that since I've started using it correctly, has helped me greatly understand how much I have each month - thus helping me calculate how much I can save each month. Hope it helps

  • Thanks! I will find that really useful to see where my money disappears every month. I might even start getting the cash out each week so I don't spend more than I want to. Although that probably would be to impractical. Think it will definitely help though.

I'm obsessive about recording every transaction, so I find cash a bit stressful. I have a book to write things down in, but sometimes I assume I will remember what I spend and then spend half hour trying to remember what I could have spent the missing 92p on!

I like to use cards for everything so that I have a record, but also I like to have all my cash in savings accounts as long as possible earning me interest, and only pay off my credit card on the due date. Another good thing about using credit cards is I earn points on my Debenhams card to spend in Debenhams (my favourite shop) and on my AA card I can get cash-back or shopping vouchers!

Speaking of recording (or forgetting to record) cash purchases, I was naughty and spent £3.49 on a sandwich and chocolate bar today which I haven't recorded! Better do that right now.

  • Spreadsheets are always good, though I'm lazy and used MS Money :)

Had a bit of a naff few months savings-wise. Had a car accident in November which wrote my car off (Mondeo). To be fair me and the Mondeo never got on, so I wasn't devastated at losing it, though I had to buy a new car with the insurance payout, plus a £2300 borrowed from my Mum. I'm in debt for the first time since I bought my other car 6 years ago - though I'm repaying mum £100 a month so it's going down nice and quickly.

On the plus side I now have a car I really enjoy (cars are important to me since I spend a lot of time driving). However it needed a cambelt change which knocked my savings out a bit. I now need to concentrate on increasing my ISA, which needs to pay for my car insurance in April.

Just an update from me, in the 3 months since i joined this thread i have managed to double my savings and i now have 15k saved!

My situation has changed a bit whereby i have been able to save a lot more and also had a lucky competition win and sold something for another 3k, im so cuffed!

Means i only need another 15k to go instead on 23k, so hopefully the move will happen in 2-3 years now rather than the 3-5 i predicted. Well thats if everything stays the same, im sure something will throw a spanner in the works!

just an update since October, my savings are now 17k, just saving wages and trying to save money here there and everywhere!

well done with your totals! keep going!

    Hi,

I've been reading the forum for a few months now, and its definitely time I joined! Its very encouraging and motivating reading everyone elses MS news!!

I am 27 and have been saving for a couple of years since I graduated. I don't have a graduate job but I have been on 2 'big' holidays in this time.

I'm at £23,530 just now, and I've just set a target of £33K to finish on by the end of the year. This is for a flat deposit.

I am not hoping for a super amazing flat but I like having cash in the bank, and hoping for a good mortgage rate when I am lucky enough to come to buy.

This year I have spent about £40 on food and travel and a couple of pints so I'm pretty happy with that. Trying to live economically in January and get into the habit of taking a packed lunch (i like my bed too much!) and walking everywhere to save ££.

Also, have set up a selling account online and have sold some cd's - as soon as the money comes into my account i earmark for a summer holiday. :money:

    Good luck everyone!
    GOAL: To save £9,500 this year. [31/01/11: £1104.37/9,500 :D - 11.6%]

    WHY: Deposit, FTB.

    HOW: Micromanaged my spending - no more £1 here's £1 theres ...

Barros, we make our lunches the night before (be it leftovers from tea or sandwiches/wraps etc). That way we don't have to get up so early in the morning!

Congratulations on your savings so far! Were you saving whilst at uni or is that just since you graduated?
