How much can you save?

Decided to speculate somewhat with approx £5k's worth of my savings. Investing in some small AIM companies dealing in mining and uranium. Hope I make some money rather than lose it this time....0

I'm actually doing pretty well on the Thunderball at the moment. I know gambling isn't money saving, but it is kind of exciting and if I win nothing I'm down no more than £15 a month (I play 3 times a week...)
I've had 8 wins in 13 weeks, which is winnings of £139, versus tickets costing £39, so not bad
I am convinced I'll win big any week now...Target Cash Net Worth: £25K by January 2012

I have updated my signature! I haven't been around since September ish. After writing off my car in September (the cause of the huge drop in worth in October) I got a bit disillusioned at the whole saving thing. It felt awful to go back 9 months in terms of savings, and I just lot sight of "the point" of doing it. Things are picking up again now though. As the bruises fade from the accident, the savings total increases. I have one bruise left (I never thought it possible that a bruise could last for nearly 4 months!) which I hope will fade by the time I get back to where I was - 67.2% of the way towards my target!
December was an okay month, but January will be a good one. It was my birthday on Saturday, and I got mainly money so my Christmas bills are paid and I've treated myself a little too, AND I've still managed to save some.
Happy New Year everyone - I wish you all happiness and health and ever increasing wealth for 2011 and forever after!Target Cash Net Worth: £25K by January 2012

Hey good luck. How much did you lose last time though? I'm tempted by shares when I see people claiming they're up by 95%!!! but I'd be the unlucky one and be down 95% lol.0 -
Hi all.
I'm new here. I'm currently 21 years old. I've promised myself this year that i'm going to save more money! Not really saving towards anything really. I just want to have some money behind me.
I looked at my bank statement for the past two months and i've spent money on things that well, have been a waste of money. I would like to cut all that out. Things that I could of lived without.
I've started a new job at a Graphic Design company and my plan is to save around £30-£40 a week into a savings account. It's not that much really, but If I can do that maybe I could increase that amount in a few months or so.
Does anyone have any tips on how to save? Without the temptation of wasting money on things I don't need! haha
Thanks for reading

Thanks! I'd say I'm a smart guy (electronic engineer) but my investment record is rubbish - and I've read a LOT about it. I've lost about £1.5k on shares so far. Don't hold long enough. Also the market always turns on me.
Bought builders shares thinking they'd go up - they went down, lost money. Now they're going back up
Bought tech shares (risky) on German exchange prior to Greek market crash - lost money. Now rising again
Just bought into some miners share but gold is dropping in price
I need a break!0 -

I found that writing the things i bought, down on paper helps alot. For example i look at the takeaways and think why did i bother when i already had food in.
But i find it also helps to say to yourself im going to stop buying ...... but i am allowed to .......
So for example with me it is: I am going to stop buying takeaways but i am allowed a couple of pints at the weekend.
or: I am stop going to buy clothes that i dont really need but i can still go to the cinema now and again.
I only say this because if you literally try and save everything you earn apart from your outgoings then you will be miserable. Just dont go mad.

Oh I am glad you are ok. Don't be disillusioned. Of course, saving is sensible but there is more to life than money; your health is so much more important!
Very nice work with your winnings!0
