Not sure on getting the butterflies to stick to the icing, but to get the icing to stick onto the cake you would usually use a very thin spreading of apricot jam (the smooth kind).£2 Savers Club 2011 (putting towards a deposit
) - £588

Silly question.. I can bake quite well but never tried fancy icing. My daughter is 7 soon and i want to make a normal round cake and ice it with pink icing(ready to roll) and top with butterflies, My questions are how do you get the icing to stick to the cake, then the butterflies to the icing? Also can you buy small cutters for the icing?
Hi
I have made a birthday cake for a friend which I covered in white icing and decorated with butterflies, have tries to find the photo I posted but carnt find it. Will get it off flickr and posr for you to see, I always put a thin coat of buttercream on the sponge then the icing, I stuck my butterflies on by wetting the icing slightly and the butterflies will stick themselves but do not over wet or the iciing will go soggy.

I did a cake decorating course a few years back and they taught us to be generous with the jam/buttercream filling and then let it squidge out over the sides so you can spread it all over the cake in thin layer to stick the icing to the cake.
To stick icing to icing I would suggest you use vodka instead of water because water makes the icing dry shiny looking whereas the vodka dries without leaving a mark. I know it sounds a bit wierd but this is what they do in cake shops and I have used it in many adult/kid cakes since then and it works great and no taste!
Cutters are available on ebay or any cake decorating shop pretty cheaply.0 -

Thanks Zippy I saw that someone on here had done something similar (theirs was a bit better if I'm being completely honest but he loved it anyway)
For attaching decorations to cakes I use homemade glue - 1 part typo powder (cmc) to 30 parts water, stir briskly an then leave overnight. I can't believe I paid £3 for a tiny pot before I discovered to make it myself!!
I've now started on my Halloween cake - it's going to be a 3 tier cake with the top tier being a mini version on the Debbie Brown pumpkin. I've made the below trick or Treater to go onto it too0 -
here's another cake i've made today0

that's a lovely cake odollybird, love the colours and looks like you've done a great job with the Mickey figure.
Stokegal: the Halloween figure is looking good! can't wait to see the Halloween Cake. I have volunteered to make 100 buns for a Kids Halloween party at the weekend, I think I'm just going to decorate them with orange coloured swirly icing and either a plastic spider on top or a spider made from fondant (am a little bit worried that someone might try to eat the plastic spider!)
