Hi
I am amazed at the fantastic cakes and the talented people on this thread. Can anyone recommend books for cake decorating?0 -
Hi Spasguidedogs
Welcome to the thread
I have a book by Debbie Brown see link
I find her instructions really easy to follow but most I just think of ideas and google things
I dont know how everyone else feels now but whenever I look at a cake now I automatically disect it in my head of how I would make it and how difficult it appears. I was looking at wedding cakes with my OH (he was very worried as he has not even thought about proposing) and my tastes have totally changed - previously I would have wanted a plain white cake with minimal fuss or decoration now i am just in complete awe of detailed and intricut piping, probably because I would never even attempt to do something like that.
I attended a conference the other week where the guest speaker was Jim Lawless - he's a motivational speaker and got everyone to think of their one thing that they would love to do in their life, my absolute fantasy would be to open a cafe / cake store but would never do so because it just seems like a pipe dream - I have a stable job, dependant child and a whole catalogue of financial errors in the past which would mean I would never get the finicial backing from a bank to do so.. But I'm obsessed by the dream... When I'm at home I'm trying out new reciepes, watching cake decorating shows, googling ideas, when i'm at work I constantly sketch ideas for cakes, ideas for figures etc... I have never been satisfied from a job as i have from seeing a person's face when I hand them their finished cake or hearing how yummy it is. I know I need to research it more and have been nosing on the Cash from Baking thread but I think I just need someone to give me a big shove away from playing it safe and putting myself out there.... Oo eck!!! I dont know where that came from then!!! I never say those words out loud normally0 -
Hi Stokegal
Thanks for the link. Funnily enough I was looking at this book from Amazon a few days ago, wondering whether to order or not.
A few years ago my mother in law gave me a book by Debbie Brown - Favourite Character Cakes and well as Fun Cakes by Ann Nicol.
Thanks again for your help, and I will be placing an order with Amazon!:)0 -
Where are all the Halloween pics???
Here is a pic of some Halloween buns I made for a Kids Halloween Party (I made just under 100 in total!)
and before anyone says it, yes I know Spiders have EIGHT Legs, BUT I was fed up with rolling out fondant icing!!

Nielsen-massey vanilla extract is £5.25 in Tesco.
At the moment it is part of the 3 for 2 (cheapest product free) on selected baking products.
I love this extract and will be stocking up!!:j0 -
Thanks Spasguidedogs - I rushed out to my local Tesco but didnt see any 3 for 2 signs but picked up 6 Vanilla Extracts and 6 Regal Ice - All 3 for 2!!!
Fab cupcakes Zippy!!
I made this cake for a halloween party - i wasnt that pleased with it to be honest but it was very yummy!!!0 -
What an amazing cake Stokegal, I'm loving the mice, so cute!
Did you finish the other halloween cake with the trick or treater on the top?0 -
I didnt use the trick or treater in the end
I'm having a firework party on Friday so am looking for some inspiration for cakes for then.
After my relevation last night I had a serious chat with the OH and talked about the long term goal and decided to take some advice from the motivational speaker to get 1 step closer to my goal each day so today I...
Called my landlady to see if she would let me use my kitchen to bake cakes as a business - See wasn't in the office
Called Enviromental Health to arrange for the to inspect my kitchen - not so easy - I have to complete an application form and then they assess me
Contacted the local Farmers Market to see about setting up a pitch - There was no number, you have to ask in personat the market
Called my local college to sign up for a Food Hygenie Course - They no longer teach the £30 Level 1 course, just the £65 Level 2and it's on 2 days
Both in the week when I'm at work
Called back up college RE Food Hygenie Course - They do the course on 1 dayBut again it's in the week
and they charge £85
Called college about starting Cake Decorating Course - They have spaces available but I needed to register by 7pm today and wasnt home in time
So I'm no further forward really... Back to the drawing board - need to think of a business name first!!
