  • I registered a company on Monday and have been spammed by the various Meter Registration companies from 8.30am this morning. The first call was from United Energy who obviously wanted details and warned that if I didn't tell them what they wanted I would receive up to 40 calls a day - nice approach I thought!

Sure enough I started getting the calls and subsequently found this thread, since reading this I just told them I didn't have a business property and worked from a residential address, the calls have now stopped.

Fingers crossed it's over for me (time will tell) I hope everyone on this thread gets sorted too.

Just phoned me 10 mins ago and gave me much the same story as everyone else about my wifes new shop. And because i was dealing with my child i could not concentrate properly and found myself tied into a 3 year verbally agreed contract. Is there a way out of it.
  • You will have a 14 day cool off period, I'd get back on to them and cool off pretty quick!
  • I'm glad to see the posts here about the 'Meter Registration Service' they confirm what I suspected. A nasty underhand marketing operation.
They have been calling me incessantly for the last 2 months since I started a new business. The first week they started by telling me I'd been put on an 'emergency electric supply' and needed my details to register my meter - or I would be cut off. I smelled a giant rat and told them where to go!

After initially simply hanging up, the calls kept coming and I got curious. So I began to chat in a friendly way to some of their tele sales people. I even had long talks about the unemployment situation and the reasons why they did this unpleasant job. Most of them admitted they hated working for the outfit but needed the money. Several have told me they believe that they are actually employed by Opus Energy.

I still get the calls. If business is quiet in the shop I will amuse myself chatting with them, and provide fictitious details. I invent meter readings, bank details, and the managers name, etc. A good one is to ask them to call 'the boss' and give them a telephone number in Russia or Thailand.

One tip I'd give to anyone starting a business and registering their details with Yell.com or Thompson local, etc. Is always give a memorable contact name different from your real name, like Mr Mudflap or Ms Taken, something silly. Then when you get the marketing calls (and you will!) you will know what they are.

I forgot to add, if you are being continually harassed by this mob (Registrant:
    Benjamin Dexter Ltd

    Registrant type:
UK Limited Company, (Company number: 5932148)

    Registrant's address:
    3rd Floor, Swan Buildings
    Swan Street
    Manchester
    M4 5JW
    United Kingdom)
it's worth reporting the matter to Gt Manchester Police, to allow them to build up a file of complaints.

After 3 months of thinking I had dealt with all my gas and electricity issues my supply has been taken over! I have alot of time for British Gas, considerably less for Opus who use very questionable brokers. It is high time in the UK the British Government took control of this situation. These posts are endless, causing stress to many who supply jobs and deserve a streamlined honest gas and electric industry. I am half tempted to put an epetition together and start a campaign to introduce laws on commercial gas and electric selling. The manner I was sold my policy is quite frankly disgusting and should be criminal. Recordings NEED to fully recorded from the outset with these "registration" companies who are obviously brokers. I have many recordings and will forward the above company recordings to Gt Manchester police in the coming weeks. All of this takes time, something I don't have loads of but I am really feeling for some of these victims posting here. Thats what they are, victims of lies, unethical calls etc while big utilities (in my case OPUS) are fully aware of this yet keep telling me there is no evidence. Do they not read these forums? They should be squeezing on these brokers to tidy up and start asking for FULL RECORDINGS OF THE ENTIRE CONVERSATION from the dribble spouted from the outset. British Gas demonstrate this ethical approach. Opus could even set up a spoof company and let the calls roll in and gather their own evidence. The CEO should be ashamed of himself...........

Thank you for your comment. Opus don't condone mis-selling or selling under the meter registration service by any third party brokerages.

I would like to try and identify the broker's identity and would appreciate if you could contact me to provide further details.

    Kind regards,

    Andy Nash
    Operations Director

With all due respect Andy, your company has known about this company for a long time and done nothing about their behaviour. It is obviously pointless proving you with details. I have provided details to Gt Manchester police.
