MBNA Annual Fee

We haven't used out MBNA card in ages and haven't had a letter.
Will they send a letter if they are applying the fee to us even if we don't use the card? They won't just add the fee without saying?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Quick Grabbit, Freebies, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning and the UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.

Thanks for the question! That's my fear as well.
To be honest when I know who the mail is from and know I don't owe anything I often just open and have a look in without removing contents. :eek:0 -
Strange...I have just been to their website https://www.mbna.com/europe and there is no mention of an annual fee on any of their cards as far as I can see. I even checked the WWF card that PWW2004 mentioned below and even that said 'annual fee' £0.
Can they add these annual fees then if they state on the terms and conditions on their website that there is no annual fee?0 -
I understand that they can do what they want so long as they notify you of a change in your terms and conditions. Their website is still advertising no fees and some comment about not expecting you to pay for the privilage of using their card, which as I commented on another thread, is false advertising in a way (though no doubt they mean it for new customers!). Never mind, as one account closes ... ;-)
Phoned and cancelled mine the other day.

Also just tearing up cards and informing MBNA is not good enough. Also remember to cancel any direct debits which you may have set up using MBNA cards. I found out long time ago that I had my SKY viewing set up using this card and although after cancelling the SKY overlooked my notice and made a DD request and MBNA paid that request. I informed sky that I had cancelled Sky viewing, they apologised and said that the money will be refunded to credit card. But guess what? By the time I recived the statement from MBNA, although I had written to them informing that I had closed my account with them. They said that if a request was made by a company with whom I had set up DD then they can not stop that and they have to pay and I was asked to either pay the money in full or make minimum payment by certain date. By the time SKY refunded the credit card company my payment date had lapsed and guess what? Yep I got £25 non payment letter + intrest. I disputed this and every month the charges kept going up until they reached over £300. It also effected my credit record at Experian as I was informed to be non payer. This dragged on for nearly 7 months............. So beware and make sure that you stop all the DD set up using MBNA cards. :eek:0

Regular payments off a credit card are known as CPAs (Continuous Payment Authority) and are indeed a pain - have a read of this thread for more information.0 -
Now we know why ISP's prefer credit/debit card!0

I too have been informed that I will recieve an annual fee. I phoned MBNA about this and they said the same thing.
Personally, I am not too bothered. I pay my balance in full each month, havent made the company any money for the past 5 years and I understand what the costs are in setting up each card holder.
Personally, I am pleased with the service I have recieved and extremely glad their UK HQ are in Chester and not based in India.
I also have a Capital One Card and cant stand being passed through to an Indian call centre where they cant fully understand what I am talking about.
If the annual fee means they will continue to operate from the UK where expenses are greater, then so be it! I wouldnt have it any other way!!!0 -
From what is said the fee seems to effect people who pay off their balance each month... does the charge only effect certain 'brands' of MBNA card or all types?0

Did you manage to get ((M)y (B)ank (N)ever (A)gain)) to pay up then, or did you have to ?Like a priceless jewel buried in dark layers of soil and stone, earth radiates her brilliant beauty into the caverns of space and time.
Stately trees seem to brush the deep blue sky. Clouds billow to form magestic peaks. The songs of birds fill the air creating symphony upon symphony0
