Spookily a friend who is an MBNA cardholder and pays off in full each month told me of this the other day. He rang them. The operator said 'it's because we don't make any money out of you'.
10/10 for honesty MBNA!!!0 -
Hi can anyone tell me WHEN these letter went out? or Are they in the process of letting people Know. I do not use my card very often and pay off in full when the statment arrives.
I remember getting a letter with LOTS of small print a couple of months back but didnt see anything about an annual fee.
Does anyone know of a way to check with them.0 -

Well they make money from what you spend because of the charges levied on retailers. So no honesty there!0 -

I have an "Abbey" branded card and I haven't received any such letter from MBNA. I assume from what people are saying that the letters are quite explicit in spelling out that you will be charged an annual fee and it's not just a case of "here's our revised T&Cs" and the annual fee is hidden away somewhere in the small print.0 -
Mine appears to be an oddity then.
A card with £9400 balance that was coming to the end of a 0% period.
I was going to pay it off anyway but surely to MBNA this is a card that they were possibly going to start making money from after losing money for months.A greedy man's bag is never full0 -
I received a letter from MBNA the other day but as far as I could see it was only about them now charging fees on Balance Transfers.
Can anyone confirm if the fee was mentioned in this letter or not and I have just missed it?
Is there anyway I can check if an annual fee is going to be applied to my card or not if I have missed it?
Thanks0 -
I also haven't used the Abby card for months, maybe more than a year. Only a couple of months ago they phoned me and twisted my arm to take out another that gives points if I remember correctly. Eventually I said OK as I rarely use a credit card. So far no letter about charges, but I acknowledge it most cost a "bomb" to maintain dormant accounts and sending other junk mail.0

They are targeting affiliate cards as well. We have had a World Wildlife card for the last ten years and got a letter advising us of the £15 charge. Cancelled card last night and will cancel WWF standing order as well - don't like dealing with organsiations which condone these practices.
The card has normally been paid off but sometimes used as a short term low cost loan when the % was right, so they probably were not making money from us.
Finally, when i went to cancel the card last night by phone on the normal MBNA number on the card, the initial options were 1 close card and 2 speak to a specialist. Tried 2 and the phone went dead. Tried two more times and the same happened. BANG went any chance of MBNA keeping our business. Shame as I thought it was a well run card. When cycling, I pay the same road tax as any other zero carbon emission vehicle.0 -
I would be interested in hearing if anybody has had an annual fee added within a year of openning the card.
I am 2 months into a Virgin 9 month 0% BT and do not fancy having to close my account before the end of the 9 months but will do as soon as I reach it so I do not get charged an annual fee.
Would I be correct in thinking that if you signed the terms and conditions that said "no annual fee" the company would be on dodgy ground if they tried to introduce a fee in the first year but could do so without problem after 12 months? Two Ways to Live

yep - they slapped that one on me. I've always paid my balance off in full. Been with them for about 10 years. Goodbyeeeeeeeee to them!0
