I applied for an MBNA card a couple of years ago because they were offering 'free travel insurance'. I've never used the card, or the insurance. I think I may have missed the letter as, although I've signed up to mail preference service thingy MBNA use my holding a card as an excuse to send junk, which obviously gets ditched. Is there any way to find out if you've been targeted?

I am sure that you will still get mail which relates to changes of terms and conditions on your account, even being signed up to the mailing preference service. They are legally obliged to send you this info.

I too have been informed that I will recieve an annual fee. I phoned MBNA about this and they said the same thing.

Personally, I am not too bothered. I pay my balance in full each month, havent made the company any money for the past 5 years and I understand what the costs are in setting up each card holder.
Personally, I am pleased with the service I have recieved and extremely glad their UK HQ are in Chester and not based in India.
I also have a Capital One Card and cant stand being passed through to an Indian call centre where they cant fully understand what I am talking about.
If the annual fee means they will continue to operate from the UK where expenses are greater, then so be it! I wouldnt have it any other way!!!
I used to work for the above for mentioned credit card co -- I now proudly display Martins car sticker for all to see! MBNA have been operating call centres in India for over 2yrs! Haven't you had any sales calls you lucky person?!!

Tell us more, did you have to sign the official secrets act?

Yes- I've been informed that as from November I will be charged £15 annual fee for my card. I've been with MBNA for many years and I always pay off any outstanding balance at the end of the month, though I generally pay by online transfer rather than awaiting a paper statement.

I've written to them telling them just what to do with their card (easier now I've cut it up....).

Like you ! Been with them 4 years, always pay off in full every month but I receive paper statements. Spoke to them by phone - my options I was told....
'we can cancel it now by phone or you can phone the special automated number !!' not interested in any dialogue, so.... I'm not any more ! Cancelled and opened another a new card with a more user friendly outfit.

Strange...I have just been to their website https://www.mbna.com/europe and there is no mention of an annual fee on any of their cards as far as I can see. I even checked the WWF card that PWW2004 mentioned below and even that said 'annual fee' £0.

Can they add these annual fees then if they state on the terms and conditions on their website that there is no annual fee?

They don't state in the terms and conditions there is no annual fee. They say there is no annual fee at present. Every credit card I have taken out always has a we may introduce a fee in the future as long as we give you notice. MBNA is no different.

I would be interested in hearing if anybody has had an annual fee added within a year of openning the card.

I am 2 months into a Virgin 9 month 0% BT and do not fancy having to close my account before the end of the 9 months but will do as soon as I reach it so I do not get charged an annual fee.

Would I be correct in thinking that if you signed the terms and conditions that said "no annual fee" the company would be on dodgy ground if they tried to introduce a fee in the first year but could do so without problem after 12 months?

The terms and conditions refer to No annual fee at present. Again like the poster above buried in the small print there is always a clause of any credit card to say that we may introduce fees in the future as long as we give notice.

    Here's MBNA's clause...

    "11 Altering this agreement
11a As well as changing the interest rate and handling fees under paragraph 2g, we may also change or introduce any other term of this agreement, as long as we give you at least 14 days’ notice."
