Have you been into the BIOS settings and checked the boot order has CD before floppy?
Enter into your BIOS setup utility, you usually need del, alt+ctrl+enter(explicitly in that order) or one of the function keys.0 -
Hello everyone, I just had an idea why don't we start a central thread relating to Linux and it's user's, I am a great supporter of Linux and I am currently doing a qualification in Linux too, I work in my day job as an I.T Support Engineer and predominantly work with Microsoft products
I mean supporting Linux is like supporting Macs - very little viruses, no spyware, and users don't (CAN'T) do anything they shouldn't that would majorly cause any problems.
Once its set up - if there's power getting to the hardware, the system is working.0 -
Hi
great idea!
some questions so here goes:
What is everyone's favourite Linux os Ubuntu or ??
I wanted to know if it was possible to do a 3 way bootup?
How is this done, is there some open source software for it?
At the moment I have 3 drives on desktop pc, one is a baby one just 7.85GB and I've just got a copy of Ubuntu 8.04, I know it's only 4GB to install and run, but once I install other open source software will 3.85 GB be enough? I must admit I like software add ons!! I'd like to create music files [amateur]+dtp etc. Any ideas anyone please?
Should I format [scramble egg!!]:rotfl: the disk first or install over it?
thanks to all

Does any one else use Zenwalk Linux (http://www.zenwalk.org/)? I sometimes think I'm the only one!
It's by far the best distro I've tried. It runs pretty quickly even on old hardware, isn't filled with hundreds of bloated apps/utilities, and is beautiful in its simplicity!
It's a great way to resurrect old hardware (maybe not quite minimalist enough for old 486s) and great to learn a bit about Linux without getting distracted by all the automated tools and eye candy.0 -
Yes - triple-boot or more is possible. I've got an old PIII which is set up to boot into Ubuntu, PCLOS or Kubuntu, and all 3 work fine.
It can be easy or not so easy depending on the order in which you install. If you want Windoze as one of your OS you will have to install that first as it will typically trash everything else on the disk. I chose to do PCLOS as my first because IIRC it doesn't detect other OS installations and add them to GRUB. As long as your last install is a version of Ubuntu it should automatically find all the other OS's and create a custom GRUB menu with them all in.
If you install in a different order you will probably have to edit GRUB's menu.lst yourself.
You'll need a separate ext3 partition for each distro, but only one swap partition as they don't mind sharing! You could just about get 3 distros on your disk, as each should go into 2.5GiB, but you won't have much space to add more software...
On mine I also tried to create a further xfs partition to put data on that could be "seen" by all 3 OS's, but for some reason couldn't make that work.0 -
I was so worried about going over to linux and messing up Windows and what have you by a dualboot, that I put two £7 racks in for my sata harddrives, which allows me as a beginner to experiment with all kinds of distros.
I know you'll all sigh, but I would have been too much of a scaredycat to jump in without a pair of waterwings.Peel back your baby's eyelid to find no nationality or religious identity mark there. Peer at your baby's eyes for them to reflect back just people-throw away your flags and religious symbols...0 -

Not at all - when I converted my main PC from Windows to Linux, I physically removed the drive with Windows on it and put it on the shelf while I messed about with Ubuntu. It's the only way to be certain that you can go back if you need to.
It's so easy to wreck things when you're learning. On my first or second try I formatted a partition that appeared to be empty but was actually in use by the Logical Volume Manager - that installation never worked again...0 -
Easy to try linux - down load WUBI and any Ubuntu distro- Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu, Gobuntu.

http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu/derivatives and http://distrowatch.com/search.php?category=All&origin=All&basedon=Ubuntu&desktop=All&architecture=All&status=All Oops, Nope, wubi wont work on derivatives only the main Ubuntu distros tried mint 5 today wont even recognise the iso
And have a very easy dual boot system
Put both wubi and the iso in same directory and start wubi - to get rid of the linux install, run wubi again, no damage done to windows works just fine0 -
Hello guy's, I am playing about with Ubuntu at the moment and trying to join it to my Active Directory running on a Windows Server 2003 domain controller, having a few problems at the moment but as soon as I have sused it out I will post my method incase it will be of use to anyone.Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.0
