Hello everyone, I just had an idea why don't we start a central thread relating to Linux and it's user's, I am a great supporter of Linux and I am currently doing a qualification in Linux too, I work in my day job as an I.T Support Engineer and predominantly work with Microsoft products, but as I learn more about Linux and how robust and secure it is, the more I want promote it's usefulness so having a central thread on Linux will help user's understand it better and learn more and it will give new, curios windows user's further insight in to this wonderful operating system and show them that there is life outside of "Windows". This is the second club I have started on MSE and I would hope it is as successful as the first one, so get posting and give us your view's, knowledge, tip's and trick's with Linux may it be Xandros for the Eee PC, Mandriva, Ubuntu or what ever your favourite flavour of Linux is, lets put Linux on the free-for-all menu so everybody can benefit.
And most of all it is 100% free!
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

Great, so are you a Linux user or just curios?Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.0

Linux is awesome, and I would strongly encourage any PC users to check it out. You can dual boot with windows if you'd still like to use Windows sometimes, and some distributions will even run from a CD, so you can try it out without installing anything. There is a bit of a learning curve, but it's nothing the average computer user won't be able to figure out and its getting easier to use all the time.
If I ever had to go back to a PC, it would be Linux all the way; there's no way I would use Windows again (at least, not in any of its current forms).
A Linux thread or board would be a great idea if it'll encourage people to use it. Using free software instead of the costly proprietary alternatives definitely qualifies as money saving!
This should be stickied at the very least.0 -

Totally agree, I am trying to convince my company to introduce Linux server as an alternative, I have a Linux server at home running along side my Windows 2003 server, I do all my experiments on them before implementing them at work, Windows server 2003 cost's £800 with 5 client access licences, not cheap, I also run Xandros on my Eee PC laptop and Ubuntu on my desktop.
Addendum:
You can also integrate Linux into Active directory via Samba and Winbind.Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. I have used it in the past, dual-booting on laptop with XP.
My son also ran it on his old pc, with XP.
I have been using Kubuntu from the latest cd on my new laptop, and might even dual-boot it with Vista.0 -
I've been off work with a gammy leg for the past month during which time I've downloaded and installed to play with: Ubuntu 8.04, Mandriva 2008, Chrunchbang Linux, Linux Mint 5, Open Suse 10.3 and 11.
Ubuntu and Suse 11 (on which I'm writing this) are triple booted with XP on my main PC. It is a steep learning curve but it keeps the old grey matter churning.
The forums are excellent (especially Ubuntu), if you have a question just ask, noobs welcome and encouraged.
Linux does almost everything I want (once I can print a CD/DVD and do some DTP) and cost me absolutely nothing but time.

Great stuff Geoff, I am in the middle of downloading "Puppy-eee" Linux for my Eee PC to try as an alternative to Xandros, it has a much smaller foot print on the FDisk and runs fully loaded within the RAM, I will let you know how I get on.Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want?
